Happy Sunday!

Did you know that gratitude can actually change our brains?

Practicing gratitude can help rewire our brain's pathways so that we are better able to manage stress, depression, and can even contribute to pain management.

When we experience stress, we can often go into 'fight or flight' and our 'caveman' brain takes over, telling us we're in danger. When we practice gratitude regularly, our brain is better able to determine if we are actually in danger, or if it is a manageable stress/anxiety.

Gratitude is always something that's helpful for our emotional health, but it's also something that can make our brains healthier as well!

An example of a quick gratitude practice that can easily be completed daily would be "Three Good Things." This exercise consists of choosing three things each day for which you're grateful.

I'm grateful for:
- The ability to grow my practice.
- Having loved ones who care about me.
- Being able to learn more about being a good social worker.

Take care. πŸ’œ

Happy Sunday!

Today's topic surrounds unhealthy relationships and may cause distress for some. Please check in with yourself before reading.

Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is often talked about in terms of physical abuse. However, it can take on many different forms and is often subtle and inconsistent. Abuse can look like physical harm, however, it may also look like making threats, isolating, controlling finances, controlling access to children, insults, stalking, giving their partner the silent treatment, or gaslighting.

The term 'gaslighting' has been more popular lately and is often thrown around in everyday conversation, however, it is very commonly used in controlling relationships. The abuser will question their partner's recollection of events, telling them they are wrong, or 'crazy' and that those things did not happen. They will deny facts and their partner's feelings, leading to their partner to question their own memory and reality.

The abuse within intimate relationships is rarely about the actual abuse (ex. physical, sexual, emotional), rather the control itself. IPV is bred and fueled by power and control.

While this is something Leave the Light on Counselling can help with, some other community resources are as follows:

Did You Know? Your Anxiety Lies to You!

Anxiety can be beneficial in circumstances where it allows us to know there may be danger, or encourages us to prepare more (for an interview or test, for example). However, too much anxiety can impact our daily lives and create obstacles that can be difficult to overcome.

It can be helpful to think of anxiety as something separate from our person. Instead of thinking, "I'm so anxious, I'm always thinking the worst", change that language to "My anxiety is talking to me, do I need to listen?"

Determining whether anxiety is based on fact or an opinion can be helpful in deciphering its intent. For example, "I'm going to fail this presentation tomorrow." A way to investigate this thought would be to review the facts: Have I presented before? Have I done well in the past? Am I prepared?

Eventually these skills become second nature and takes less effort to determine if anxiety is helping or harming.

Happy Sunday!

I wanted to talk about another approach to therapy that I like to use when supporting clients; Narrative Therapy.

Narrative Therapy is one of my favourites as it is built on a strengths-based foundation which focuses on what you have already done well that has been helpful for you. Narrative Therapy helps to examine our stories that contribute to us feeling shame, guilt, or blame and then re-frame those stories to see another perspective.

Reviewing our experiences through another lens allows us to find examples of strength we have shown and exceptions to blame we have accepted as truth.

Narrative Therapy provides the opportunity to view our anxiety, trauma, and shame separately from ourselves so we can start to rewrite our stories. πŸ’œ

Happy Sunday and Happy Pride!

In addition to June being Pride month, this last week has been full of Pride celebrations, building up to today's Pride parade!

It's so important to celebrate Pride, and equally, if not more, important to be living your daily life with values that make those around you feel safe and seen.

Your conversations around the dinner table, office chit chat, social media posts all let those around you know if you're a safe person or not.

Be kind to yourselves and those around you.

Happy Pride! β€οΈπŸ§‘πŸ’›πŸ’šπŸ’™πŸ©΅πŸ’œ

Hello,
I would like to reach out and let you know about some changes that I've been working on. Going forward, Megan Taylor Counselling will be changing its name to Leave the Light On Counselling. This new name has sentiment attached and feels fitting for how I would like to grow this practice and help others.

Starting October 16 I will be working part time and able to see clients online, via telephone, and now in person at 21 Pippy Place! You can reach out via messenger, email, or phone to schedule or visit my website to book online.

Thank you all so much for the support you've shown so far, and I hope this next chapter allows me to continue to grow and learn.

Losing a loved one is never easy, and grief can often become overwhelming, especially this time of year. If you are feeling the impact of grief, please reach out for help. πŸ–€

Dad picks up Milk Biscuit, who smells of bubblegum (another special request from Summer), and is instructed to press the paw. The next thing we hear is nan’s voice, sweetly saying β€œHello darling,” her go-to phrase.
