I see this all the time. Someone comes in and says their reflux is "under control" because they take a PPI every morning. But the second they miss a dose, it's back. That's not control. That's suppression.
PPIs can be helpful short-term. But they were never designed to be a forever solution. And when you take them long enough to need them every single day, you're not just managing reflux anymore. You're also dealing with nutrient deficiencies, weakened bones, and a gut environment that's more vulnerable to infections.
The reflux is still happening. You just can't feel it.
And that's the part most people don't realize. The acid is still coming up. The damage is still possible. The root cause is still there. You've just turned down the alarm.
I'm not saying PPIs are bad. I'm saying they're not the finish line. If you've been on one for more than a few months and you still can't stop taking it, we need to figure out why you're refluxing in the first place.
Because once we do, most people don't need the PPI anymore.
