Have you ever wondered why it’s so hard to stick to your goals?

It’s probably not because you’re lazy or lacking motivation.

After reviewing research across psychology, behavioural science, and habit formation, three strategies consistently rise to the top:

✅ 1. Stop relying on motivation. Start using “if–then” plans.
Instead of saying, “I should work out more,” decide exactly when you’ll do it. When you remove the decision, you’re much more likely to take action.

✅ 2. Make the habit ridiculously easy to start.
Small actions repeated consistently build stronger habits than big bursts of motivation.

✅ 3. Track the behaviour—not just the outcome.
Visible progress creates momentum, awareness, and accountability.

The biggest takeaway?

Successful people aren’t necessarily more motivated. They’ve simply designed systems that make the right behaviour easier to repeat.

Small actions.
Repeated consistently.
Over time, they become who you are.

What habit are you trying to build right now?

We see this a lot in therapy but especially with high achievers!

High achievers are often the worst at asking for help.

Because when you’ve built an identity around being capable, dependable, productive, and “the one who handles things”… asking for support can feel uncomfortable.

So instead, you push through.

You tell yourself:

“I just need to get through this week.”
“Once this project is done, I’ll slow down.”
“I’m just tired.”
“I should be able to manage this.”

And because you can function for a long time while carrying a lot… no one notices how depleted you actually are.

Until anxiety gets louder.
Sleep gets worse.
Patience gets shorter.
Your mind won’t shut off.
Things that used to feel manageable suddenly feel heavy.

High functioning doesn’t always mean you’re doing well.

You do not need to wait until you’re at 1% to deserve support.

Strong people aren’t the ones who push themselves to the point of burnout. They’re the ones who recognize when it’s time to recharge. 🤍

Behind many high achievers is a quiet set of rules they live by— rules that once helped them succeed.

Slow down = failure
Rest = lazy
Mistakes = unacceptable
Worth = performance

But success at the cost of your well-being isn’t sustainable.

Therapy for high achievers isn’t about lowering your standards.
It’s about helping you succeed without burning out.
