🌟 WISHING UPON A STAR… FOR RAVENHEART’S NEXT RIGHT PERSON 🌟
A dear friend recently invited me to spend 30 days drawing a card each day from the Magical Unicorn Oracle deck. I keep drawing the same card: Wish Upon a Star.
So, I decided it was time to name the wish—and share it.
Ravenheart Farms Horse-Facilitated Wellness & Retreat is looking for a special person, or possibly the right couple, to join us in a longer-term, live-in horse-care and farm-support role beginning sometime between September 15 and October 30, 2026.
Ravenheart began in 2007 and has been rooted near Kamsack, Saskatchewan, since 2011. Our 105-acre farm is home to horses, dogs, cats, heritage log cabins, woodland, prairie, ponds and trails. We welcome children, youth, adults, families, schools and community organizations for horse-facilitated wellness and learning experiences.
Why are we looking now?
Those of us who created and continue to care for Ravenheart are growing older. We remain deeply committed to the horses, people and purpose of this place, but we recognize that we cannot—and should not—continue carrying all the physical and practical responsibility ourselves.
We are not ready to step away. We are ready to share the load.
We hope to find someone who can bring steady hands, new energy and their own gifts to Ravenheart while respecting all that has been created here.
This person should be kind, dependable, energetic, capable and genuinely experienced with horses. They must be comfortable safely catching, haltering, leading, tying and grooming horses; picking up and cleaning hooves; moving horses between paddocks; and managing gates around a herd.
Basic equine first-aid knowledge would be an asset but is not required. More important are calm handling, good judgment, careful observation and a willingness to follow Ravenheart’s established routines.
Daily responsibilities may include feeding hay, checking water, mucking paddocks and shelters, grooming, moving horses between pastures and observing their physical and emotional well-being. The ability to notice changes in appetite, movement, behaviour or soundness is important.
Our horse approach is primarily non-riding, low-pressure and relationship-based. The horses’ comfort, communication, boundaries and choices matter. The majority of our herd of 8 horses and ponies have come to us to be re-homed for various reasons, and some require special care.
Help is generally needed for approximately three to four hours per day, with a flexible schedule and agreed-upon days off. Most afternoons and evenings are free, apart from approximately half an hour of evening animal chores. Note; we also host International Wwoofers throughout the year, so a chance to meet new people, helping hands, cultural exchange, and community.
Because the horses require care every day, we will work together to create a fair schedule that provides genuine personal time. If a couple applies, hours and responsibilities will be clearly discussed and agreed upon in advance.
Ideally, we would like someone interested in making Ravenheart their home for approximately one year, allowing time to learn the herd and experience life here through all four seasons. A minimum six-month commitment may be considered. We would begin with a mutually agreed trial period and regular check-ins.
Food and accommodation are provided, with the possibility of a modest weekly stipend. Meals may be prepared and shared in the farmhouse or cooked independently.
Accommodation is provided in a rustic, cozy and furnished 1930s heritage log cabin with heat and electricity, but no running water or indoor bathroom. Drinking and washing water is supplied, outhouses are nearby, and a nighttime commode is provided. ☺ Showers and laundry facilities are available in the farmhouse.
Ravenheart is approximately 15 minutes from beautiful Duck Mountain Provincial Park, with its lakes, forests, trails and opportunities for hiking, kayaking and quiet exploration. It is a wonderful area for someone who loves nature and peaceful outdoor spaces.
We are approximately 15 kilometres from Kamsack, with no public transportation, so a reliable vehicle is strongly preferred. We can occasionally provide rides and enjoy sharing local activities and outings, but applicants should be prepared to manage most of their own transportation.
Winter is quiet and peaceful, although applicants must be comfortable with Saskatchewan weather, rural roads and outdoor animal care.
We share the farm with four dogs and six spayed or neutered farm cats. Bringing a cat may be possible, and bringing a horse could be considered after discussing care, feed, space and compatibility. A dog would require careful discussion because two of our resident dogs must be managed separately.
Ravenheart is a non-smoking environment. References and a criminal-record check, including a vulnerable-sector check, will be required because children and vulnerable participants visit the farm. Overnight visitors are generally not permitted.
Ravenheart has largely been created and cared for by women, and this opportunity may particularly speak to an experienced horsewoman seeking a meaningful next chapter. However, we are open to the right person or couple whose experience, values and way of living are a good fit.
We need someone who does not simply love the idea of horses but understands the daily realities of caring for them—early mornings, manure, mud, hay, gates, changing weather and the responsibility of noticing when something is not quite right.
Who Would Thrive at Ravenheart?
The person best suited to Ravenheart will be comfortable in their own skin and genuinely content with a quieter, more independent way of life. They will enjoy their own company without feeling isolated, while also appreciating shared meals, good conversation, laughter and being part of a small, caring community.
They will feel at home outdoors in every season—not only on beautiful summer mornings, but also in rain, wind, mud, mosquitoes, snow and Saskatchewan cold. They will understand that animals need steady care regardless of the weather and will take quiet pride in being dependable.
This opportunity may especially appeal to an artist, writer, photographer, musician, craftsperson or other creative person who longs for peaceful surroundings and uninterrupted time for their own work. With most afternoons and evenings free, Ravenheart offers space to write, paint, study, garden, reflect, walk the trails, spend time in nature, stay active or develop a personal creative project.
At the same time, the right person will be practical and action-oriented—someone who enjoys making a list, solving everyday problems, completing projects and seeing the tangible results of their efforts. They will notice what needs attention, take initiative within agreed boundaries and find satisfaction in leaving a paddock, cabin, trail or project better than they found it.
They do not need to be endlessly social or constantly busy. They do need to be grounded, resourceful, emotionally mature and able to communicate honestly. They will appreciate both independence and connection, understand the difference between solitude and loneliness, and recognize that caring for a meaningful place is made up of many ordinary tasks done consistently and well.
Most of all, they will value kindness—toward animals, people, the land and themselves—and will be looking not simply for somewhere to stay, but for a place where their presence, abilities and creativity can make a genuine difference.
This is more than a live-in farm-support role. It is an opportunity for someone seeking a grounded, purposeful and quieter way of life—someone who would value helping to care for a place devoted to horses, people, learning, connection and the land.
If this speaks to you—or brings someone wonderful to mind—please send me a private message telling me about yourself, your horse and farm experience, what you are seeking, your availability and why Ravenheart caught your heart.
In closing, for the past several spring, summer and fall seasons, we have been deeply grateful for the steady help and support of Judith Graile. Judith has contributed enormously to the daily care and well-being of the horses, seasonal farm work and countless practical projects, while also sharing her gentle, relationship-based way of working with the herd. Her experience, dedication, humour and caring presence have helped carry Ravenheart through some very busy and challenging seasons.
Sometimes wishes need wings. ♥♥♥
