Wietze 'Wes' Pieter Zwart
1936 - 2026

Wietze 'Wes' Pieter Zwart, age 90, of Strathroy, Ontario passed away peacefully surrounded by his dear family on Friday, October 2, 2026. Wes was born May 20, 1936 in Grootegast (Groningen, Netherlands), the fifth of ten children born to Jan and Dieuwerke Zwart. In 1951 at age 15 he and his family boarded the Volendam and immigrated to Canada settling in Strathroy.

One of dad's specialities was to share stories of 'vroeger.' He loved to talk about his first job in Holland running milk samples from farms to factory, and made sure all knew that he arrived in Canada on a Sunday and began working in the to***co fields on Monday.

In 1966 he, with his brother-in-law Gerrit, founded Zwart and Graansma Contractors 'Custom Builders of Happy Homes.' During the 1980's they developed Zwart & Graansma Excavating with the motto "We Move the Earth." When he was in his 70's he 'retired' and passed the business onto his oldest son and daughter-in-law and endearingly became the official 'gopher' for Zwart Excavating.

He was actively involved in Strathroy East Christian Reformed Church and proud to be one of the founding members of the Trillium Village retirement community.

He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Mary Oldenhuis, along with his five children and spouses: Mary & Ed DeBoer, Darlene Zwart & Connie Bellows, John & Carolyn Zwart, Ben & Kim Zwart, Willemina Zwart & Kelly Sibthorpe and eight grandchildren along with six great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents, two brothers, Albert and Pieter, and sister, Aafke, and is survived by his six sisters: Janna, Jantje, Sylvia, Hilda, Linda, Diane.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to special friends, Bob Ford & Barb Schram, for all their love and support through the years.

Visitation will be on Thursday, October 8 from 2 – 4 p.m. and 6 – 8 p.m. at Strathroy East Christian Reformed Church. A funeral service will be on Friday, October 9 at 10 a.m. also at Strathroy East CRC, followed by the graveside interment and a luncheon at the church. Livestream is available: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYewL0PJUYOGxiCTp3_E3aw

In lieu of flowers. the family welcomes donations to support his great-grandson Joseph with cheques made out to Carolyn Zwart or e-transfers to [email protected] for the 'Joseph Fund.'

João Bettencourt Alvernaz
1936 - 2026

It is with great sadness that the family of João Bettencourt Alvernaz announce his peaceful passing on October 4, 2026, at the age of 90.

Beloved husband of the late Maria Ema Alvernaz, João was a devoted father to Fernanda (Walter) Medeiros and Rui Alvernaz. He was a proud and loving grandfather to Robert (Mallory) Medeiros, Daniel (Sarah) Medeiros, Denise (Kyle) Brady, Alisha Alvernaz, Nathan (Nicole) Alvernaz, and Joshua (Ally) Alvernaz, and a cherished great-grandfather to Wyatt Medeiros, Owen Brady, and Mila Medeiros. João will be lovingly remembered by his sister Fatima (Luis) Neves, his sister-in-law Fernanda Goulart, and by his nieces and nephew, Lucy Dias, Luis Neves, and Sandra Goulart. He will be greatly missed by many cousins in California and the Azores, Portugal, as well as his cherished extended family in his beloved São João, Pico, and in Strathroy. He was predeceased by his parents, João and Inácia Alvernaz, and his siblings, Thiers Goulart, Lucia Macedo, and Dionísia Alvernas.

João immigrated to Canada from São João, Pico, with his wife and two children in 1967. The family settled in Strathroy, where João worked at Glendale Mobile Homes for 15 years before eventually returning to his beloved Pico. A blacksmith by trade, João was truly a jack of all trades. He had a gift for working with his hands and especially loved carpentry, creating treasured pieces for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Among his proudest accomplishments was the beautiful tongue-and-groove ceiling he crafted for Casa Espírito Santo in São João. He volunteered his time and talents with great joy and passion, always giving back to the community he loved. Joao also dedicated many years to a local marching band, serving on its Board of Directors. Although he never played an instrument himself, he was deeply passionate about the organization and was loved and respected throughout the community for his generosity and dedication.

Above all else, João's greatest pride and joy were his grandchildren. Nothing, however, brought him more happiness than having his great-grandchildren close by. The love he shared with them and the happiness they brought into his life will remain a cherished part of his legacy.

Family and friends will be received at Denning's of Strathroy on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at All Saints Roman Catholic Church, Strathroy, on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery, with a luncheon to be held afterward for family and friends, at the church.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Kidney Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society.

Irene's family was very dear to her, and she loved to spend time with her grandchildren and would frequently email or text them. She took great personal interest in all their endeavours and prayed for them daily.

Through the years, Irene's deep trust in God sustained her, and she recognized His gracious hand in both the joys and sorrows of life. Irene's life spoke for itself—diligent, hardworking, and faithful. Her quiet strength, steadfast faith, and devotion to her family were evident in all that she did.

Thanks to the many people who cared for Irene during the past few years
