Will You Be Adding Lettering to Your Monument Soon? Some Thoughts.
The below are a number of questions that need to be asked.
• How many names will go onto the memorial? Make sure that spacing of inscriptions and letter sizing allows adequate room for both present and future names.
• When more than one name is to go onto a monument, epitaphs should be worded accordingly. The epitaph will reflect on all individuals at this location. Opt. for ‘pluralistic’ epitaphs such as ‘In Loving Memory’ which when viewed applies to all who are resting at a family plot.
• For individual inscriptions, will full dates be used or short forms? January, 1, 19xx or 01.01.19xx.
How much room is needed for the inscription for each individual. Will maiden names be included? Will relationships between those on the monument be listed?
• A surname is usually located at the top of the memorial. For example: the ‘Smith Monument.’ With forethought, more than one surname can appear, indicating more than one family unit at the grave location.
• Will the monument have an emblem or emblems? Most monument companies have a book of designs where a wide variety of emblems and symbols can be added to the overall design of the headstone. Some consideration to an appropriate design is part of this process.
Keep in mind the old saying, etched in stone. Planning the layout of the memorial with an eye to both current and future needs will avoid some potential issues when family members are laid to rest at this family plot in the future.
