Who you spend time with may matter as much as what you eat or how often you exercise.

A study published in Nature Communications this January followed over 7,000 adults aged 50 and over and found that low social integration and living alone were significant risk factors for accelerated physiological aging.

People who were most socially integrated were biologically younger than their chronological age. The researchers concluded that weaker integration into social and community activities is associated with faster physiological aging, even when controlling for existing health conditions.

Separately, research from USAging found that social connection can reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, dementia, depression and anxiety, and contribute to longer, healthier lives.
