LIT is now offering the Aquatic Emergency Care (AEC) course! Aquatic Emergency Care is a first aid course designed for aquatic environments, equipping candidates with the skills to effectively respond to emergencies in and around the water. Building on Assistant Lifeguard and Standard First Aid competencies, AEC is excellent preparation for employment and progression into National Lifeguard (Pool or Waterfront).

Peter Gabriel, originally part of Genesis, might never have reached the “Big Time” in 1986 if it had not been for a Vancouver lifeguard three years earlier.

In a Facebook post, Gabriel said that he was in Vancouver in 1983, opening for David Bowie, when he went windsurfing at Spanish Banks.

“The wind got too strong for me so I folded up the sail as I’ve been taught to do and swam toward the shore,” Gabriel wrote.

The 2026 Vancouver Island Regional Lifeguard Competition is officially set for Saturday, July 11th, at West Shore Parks & Rec! This is always a highlight of the summer for the Island folks, and we’d love to see a strong showing from all over the province.

There are several ways you can get involved in the event:

Volunteer: Be a Victim or a Judge

We need volunteers to help bring the competition scenarios to life!

Victims & Judges: No prior experience is needed for these roles. It’s a fantastic way to get an inside look at how provincial-level competitions are run. Judge preference will be given to those with LSI, FAI, or NLI certifications and experience evaluating Lifesaving Society courses.

Compete

Ready to put your skills to the test? Gather a team and get ready to face off against the best guards on the Island. It’s a great day of high-energy scenarios and networking with the regional lifesaving community.

Next Steps: Check out the attached poster and scan the QR code to register your interest. We are still finalizing the fine details, so stay tuned—more information will be released closer to the event date.

On March 27 at the Lifesaving Society BC & Yukon Branch Annual General Meeting, LIT was presented 3 awards for the most participants in programs at that level of any other facility in that population group. We were awarded for Bronze Programs, National Lifeguard Programs and Swim Instructor Programs, in population groups over 175,000. We are very proud to continue being a affiliate leader of Lifesaving Society courses in British Columbia!

"In recent years, there’s been growing research on the importance of “third spaces,” a term coined by American sociologist Ray Oldenburg to describe the places outside of home (place one) and the workplace (place two) where people come to socialize and connect. A third space might take the form of a library, coffee shop or community centre. They’re proven to “serve vital and life-saving roles in our communities,” according to a 2019 report in Health & Place."

Alone in a new community, a local pool and its ‘regulars’ helped me heal.

Something’s in the air: Controlling chemical exposure in pools

“We learned that communication is key,” Harris adds. “This includes listening and taking symptoms seriously. If a worker reports they are struggling to breathe or have burning eyes, a sore throat, or a heavy chest, we offer support to the worker, document everything, and launch an investigation and follow-up assessments.”
