Teething can be a tough season for babies and their parents!
While every baby is different, teething commonly starts around 4–7 months and can come with:
- Increased drooling
- Chewing on everything
- Irritability or clinginess
- Changes in sleep
- Mild gum swelling or tenderness
- More frequent waking or wanting comfort
Some babies breeze through it, while others seem much more sensitive during this stage.
Ways to help support your teething little one:
- Offer a chilled (not frozen) teething toy including frozen breastmilk ice cubes in a mesh teether
- Cold washcloths or chilled silicone feeders
- Extra cuddles and comfort
- Keep an eye on hydration if drooling is excessive
- Try to maintain routines when possible, even during rough nights
Teething can be blamed for so many ailments but should NOT cause high fevers, persistent diarrhea, or significant lethargy. If your baby seems truly unwell, it’s important to check in with your healthcare provider.
Teething can feel endless (as in 2 years of it!) in the moment, but this phase does pass 💛
Parents, what teething symptom surprised you the most?
