Today I am observing the inauguration of Truth and Reconciliation Day. I acknowledge my privilege to live and work on the unceded land of the Semiahmoo, Katzie, Kwikwetlem, Kwantlen, Qayqayt and Tsawwassen First Nations. I recognize the atrocities committed by the hands of our government, colonizers, the church, the justice system, and within education. I also recognize the incredible strength, resilience, creativity, compassion, leadership, and activism in the face of generational trauma that has been shown by both survivors and those who have since passed on. I am grateful for existence that I experience each day but will continue to work towards combating my own pre-conceptions, biases, and ignorance as a person who's life has been made significantly easier by colonization.

Yes, yes, yes! Multi-modality teaching and communicating works wonders to boost communication effectiveness. It makes me very happy that I'm a "hand-talker" :)

This election is a big deal! There are so many issues that demand our attention and resources. Speech, Hearing, and Swallowing issues and resources (particularly the dearth of support for these these things in long-term care) have always a gap in our healthcare system and this has become especially evident over the last 18 months. We can make some noise and demand better!

By now, a lot of kids are back to the classroom at some capacity. Here's a thoughtful article that came across my desktop. It's geared towards maximizing communication for students who are deaf or hard of hearing but I think points like number (5) in the article (basic communication strategies) are something that all of us across the hearing spectrum can and should consider.

Happy September, all! This summer has been a whirlwind and it's hard to believe that many students, caregivers, and educators are looking at heading back to school in some capacity. It's a strange time with many questions and uncertainties to be sure.

If you are a parent or caregiver of a student who's heading back to school either remotely or in a classroom and are wondering about ways to engage your child about their school day, look no further! I have a list of questions asking your student about their day without directly drilling them about their day ;)

It’s a strange time, friends! Some of us are thinking about going back to school in a remote capacity (that’s me!), some of us are looking at classroom learning for the first time since…

At long last! The 4th and final segment of my Summer Speech and Language series is live! This post was plagued with lost data, computer crashes, and crazy scheduling but it's done and I love it! It's all about how you can target speech and language during road trips! Happy travels!

I have mixed feelings about road trips. On the one hand, the idea of exploration, sight-seeing, and travel is really exciting! On the other, bad traffic, restless legs, and sporadic bathroom breaks…

Who's ready for some socially distanced, out doors fun? This week is all about speech and language at the beach, the lake, river, or the pool (back yard pools as I don't imagine public pools are open and deemed safe yet 😬). Read on for ideas on how to make Beachy Bingo, Pool-Side I Spy, or 21 Questions: River/Lake/Beach Edition work for you and your language learners!

This past weekend I had the great privilege to camp at an ocean-side beach! The water was certainly too cold for me to swim but I deeply enjoyed the salty sea air, exploring in the sand and drift w…

Installment number two is for those summer days spent at home or close to home. Read on for fun activities to elicit speech and language from the house!

The area that I live in is starting to see relaxation of certain restrictions of movements, activities, and business as Covid-19 cases have been under pretty good control (thanks Bonnie Henry, BC c…

Ok! First installment in my Summer Speech and Language Series is all about... CAMPING! Enjoy, friends!

I love, love, love camping! I love the sound of wind rustling leaves, the smell of campfire, how food just tastes better because you’re eating it outside. To me, camping is the epitome of sum…

I'm back, baby! Better than ever!

I'll be kicking of the summer with a series focusing on activities that can be done to maintain speech and language skills over the summer months. Think: things you can do camping, during road trips, at the pool or the beach, and at home!

It’s transition time! Transition from the adventure of tele-education and tele-therapy, transition from modified classrooms, transition from weekly Zoom class meetups digital assignments. We&…
