"Should I Just Take an Advil?"

That was the message I received from one of my patients this morning.

She was experiencing pain around her right temple and forehead, along with a sore spot in her right neck and shoulder. She told me it felt like one of her usual migraines developing. Normally, she would take Advil. This time, she reached out to me first.

After confirming the exact location of the pain, I asked her to press a point on her left foot and said,

"Let me know if it doesn't help in a few seconds."

A few seconds later, she replied that the pain in her temple and forehead had eased, but the sore spot in her neck and shoulder remained.

I asked her to show me the exact location of the remaining soreness and then asked her to press a point on her right hand.

Again, I said,

"Let me know within a few seconds if it doesn't work."

A few seconds later, she replied that it felt better while she was pressing the point, but the soreness was still there.

I then confirmed that the soreness felt deep rather than superficial, changed to another point on her left foot, and once again asked her to let me know within a few seconds what happened.

A few seconds later, her reply was:

"It's a bit better. Manageable now."

The entire conversation took about 30 minutes, all through text messages.

One of the reasons I love practising Balance Method Acupuncture is that it isn't about memorizing a point for a headache. It is about understanding how the body is presenting at that moment and allowing its response to guide the next step. Sometimes the body's response occurs within seconds, providing another clue to help refine the treatment.

At the end of our conversation, I sent her one final message:

"I'm glad you reached out. We are facing the issues together."

To me, that's what healthcare should feel like.

Sometimes the First Step Isn't to Fight the Pain

One of the things I've been reflecting on recently is that our relationship with our body can influence how we experience discomfort.

Last night, I woke with a strong cramping pain below my belly button.

Instead of immediately trying to analyse or push through it, I simply rested my hand over the area and quietly asked,

"Are you okay?"

"What can I do for you?"

It wasn't a treatment.

It wasn't a technique.

It was simply paying attention with curiosity rather than resistance.

To my surprise, the discomfort immediately eased enough for me to fall back asleep.

This doesn't mean every pain has the same cause, and it certainly doesn't replace appropriate medical care.

But it reminded me of something I see often in practice:

Sometimes the way we relate to our body matters just as much as what we do to it.

Our bodies are constantly communicating.

Perhaps one of the most overlooked skills is simply learning how to listen.

Can something that has been helping your body eventually stop being the right treatment?

It sounds contradictory.

But in Classical Chinese Medicine, it makes perfect sense.
Recently, a former patient reminded me of one of the most fascinating principles in Chinese medicine:

Healing is dynamic.

As the body changes, the balance it needs also changes.
Sometimes healing isn't about doing more. It's about recognizing that the body has entered a new stage and needs a new balance.
I recently wrote a Clinical Reflection inspired by this patient's experience and how a small adjustment to her home-care plan made a meaningful difference.

If you're interested in understanding health beyond symptoms, I hope you'll enjoy reading it.

Can stress affect constipation and IBS-C?

Many people living with constipation or IBS-C also experience bloating, food sensitivities, fatigue, poor sleep, or changes in emotional well-being. While these symptoms may seem unrelated, Chinese medicine often views them as different expressions of the body's overall ability to regulate and adapt.

Rather than focusing only on bowel movements, treatment aims to understand the individual's underlying pattern and support the body's natural capacity to restore balance.

On my website, I've shared several real patient case studies, including people who sought acupuncture support for:

✔️ Chronic IBS-C and constipation
✔️ Bloating and digestive discomfort
✔️ Stress-related digestive changes
✔️ Digestive symptoms following a motor vehicle accident

These stories illustrate how treatment was individualized for each person and how their symptoms progressed over time.

If you're curious about how Chinese medicine approaches digestive health, I'd love to invite you to read their stories.

Can anxiety, fatigue, poor sleep, and digestive issues be connected?

In my practice, I often see these concerns influencing one another rather than existing in isolation. Treatment focuses on understanding the broader pattern affecting the individual, rather than addressing a single symptom alone.

This case study page shares real examples of people who sought acupuncture support for:

• Anxiety & depression
• Emotional exhaustion
• Fatigue
• Sleep difficulties
• Stress-related digestive concerns

Can stress affect men’s health?

Yes. In Chinese medicine, stress is viewed as something that can affect the body as a whole rather than a single system. When stress persists over time, it may influence sleep, energy, digestion, concentration, emotional well-being, and the body’s ability to recover and adapt to daily demands.

Because the body’s functions are considered interconnected, the effects of ongoing stress may be experienced in different ways by different people. Some may notice changes in sleep or energy, while others may experience tension, digestive changes, reduced resilience, or concerns related to overall health and vitality.

For this reason, Chinese medicine often considers stress an important factor when evaluating men’s health, recognizing that long-term well-being depends on maintaining balance throughout the entire system.

Shoulder Pain & Frozen Shoulder Recovery

Shoulder pain can gradually make simple activities surprisingly difficult.

Reaching overhead, getting dressed, driving, sleeping comfortably, or even lifting everyday objects can become frustrating when movement is restricted.

A 69-year-old woman sought acupuncture support for a frozen shoulder that was significantly limiting her range of motion and affecting daily life.

After her first treatment, she reported approximately 30% improvement in both pain and shoulder mobility. The following morning, she called to say her shoulder felt about 90% better.

After her second treatment, her pain had resolved, and her shoulder movement had returned to normal.

One thing that often surprises people is that I did not needle her shoulder. Using Balance Method Acupuncture, the treatment focused on points on her leg that corresponded to the affected shoulder.

Why can emotional stress affect sleep?

Chinese medicine views sleep as a process that depends on the body’s ability to settle, recover, and maintain internal balance. Emotional stress can place greater demands on these processes, making it more difficult for the mind and body to fully settle at night.

As a result, some people may experience difficulty falling asleep, frequent waking, vivid dreams, lighter sleep, or waking feeling unrefreshed during periods of emotional strain. Because sleep and emotional well-being are viewed as closely connected, Chinese medicine often considers them together rather than as separate concerns.

This is why treatment commonly looks beyond sleep itself and seeks to understand the broader pattern that may be contributing to both stress and sleep difficulties.
