I get asked this all the time: "What actually happens during a neurofeedback session? What does my child have to do?"

Honest answer: not much. That's the whole point.

A NeurOptimal® session is 33 minutes. Your child sits comfortably — in a chair, on a couch, wherever they feel relaxed. They listen to music or watch something on a screen. Two tiny sensors rest gently on the scalp and three on the ears. The sensors simply listen. Nothing goes into the brain — no electricity, no stimulation, nothing.

When the system detects that the brain's activity has shifted in a way that could be more efficient, the music briefly interupts for a fraction of a second. That tiny pause is the brain's "mirror moment" — information that lets it self-correct, naturally.

Your child doesn't need to focus, sit perfectly still, or try to do anything. The brain does the work. Most children find it genuinely relaxing. Some fall asleep.

"Neurodiverse-affirming" is a phrase that gets used a lot. I want to tell you what it actually means in my practice.

At DRW NeuroPerformance, it means I believe autism is a neurotype — a genuinely different way of experiencing the world — not a disorder to be corrected or a set of behaviours to be trained away.

When I work with an autistic child, my goal is never to make them "less autistic." My goal is to support their nervous system so they can feel more comfortable, regulated, and settled in their daily life.

A child who sleeps better, has fewer meltdowns, and navigates transitions a little more smoothly isn't a "fixed" child. They're a child whose nervous system has the support it needs to do what it's always been capable of.

That's what neurodiverse-affirming care looks like — in neurofeedback and in the counselling I offer alongside it.
