It's 8:15pm on a Thursday. Your dog has thrown up twice, won't touch dinner, and keeps looking at you like you should know what to do.

This is usually the moment people start searching online and wondering if it can wait until morning. Sometimes it can. Sometimes it really shouldn't.

We're open every day until 11pm for urgent care and same day appointments, so you don't have to guess on your own. Call us, tell us what's going on, and we'll help you decide whether to come in now.

Three rainy days and suddenly the lawn has mushrooms you've never seen before.

Some wild mushrooms in the Lower Mainland are seriously toxic to dogs, and even people who know mushrooms well can't always tell which ones by looking. Dogs, meanwhile, don't ask.

If your dog eats one, don't wait to see if they get sick. Call us right away, and if you can, snap a photo of the mushroom where it was growing or bring a piece in a paper bag.

A quick scan of the yard before letting them out goes a long way this time of year.

Summer's over. Somebody should tell the ticks.

On mild fall days they're still waiting in long grass and along trail edges, and they're very good at finding the spots nobody checks. Ears, neck, armpits and between the toes are the usual hiding places.

After a walk through long grass, run your hands slowly over those areas. A tick feels like a small, firm bump that wasn't there yesterday. If you find one and aren't sure how to remove it properly, don't dig at it. Call us and we'll take care of it.

Thanksgiving is a week away, and somewhere in Surrey a dog has already picked their seat under the table.

Before the big dinner, it's worth knowing which foods should stay on your plate: cooked bones, which can splinter; turkey skin and gravy, which are far too rich; stuffing, since it usually has onion and garlic; grapes and raisins; and any dessert made with chocolate or sugar free sweetener.

If you'd like to include them, a small piece of plain turkey meat with no skin, bones or seasoning is the safer way to do it.

Save this for next Monday, and share it with whoever always slips the dog something.

If you have a cat, please read this before you pick up a Thanksgiving centrepiece.

Lilies are one of the most dangerous plants for cats. A little pollen licked off their fur, a nibbled leaf or a sip of vase water can cause serious kidney damage, and it doesn't take much.

If your cat has been anywhere near lilies, call us right away, even if they seem completely fine. And when you order flowers this week, just ask the florist to leave the lilies out.

Most dogs will happily let you look at their teeth. Very few owners ever do.

Dental disease tends to build quietly. Breath that's worse than usual, dropping food, chewing on one side or pawing at the mouth are often the first signs, and by then there's usually something going on below the gumline.

That's why all our doctors looks inside the mouth at every exam, even when a pet is in for something completely different.

If you can't remember the last time someone checked your pet's teeth, it's probably time. Book a dental check with us, we're open every day until 11pm.

Today is World Animal Day, so here's Dr. Sam with two of our smallest patients.

Meeting new pets is one of the best parts of the job: learning their personalities, answering the hundred questions that come with a new puppy or kitten, and setting them up well from the very first visit.

If you've welcomed a new puppy or kitten recently and haven't booked their first check up yet, we'd love to meet them. Book online or give us a call.

Honest question for dog owners: do you dry your dog's paws after a rainy walk, or let them air dry on the couch?

Most of us dry the back, maybe the head, and let the paws sort themselves out on the couch. But paws that stay damp walk after walk can lead to licking, chewing and red, irritated skin between the toes. It builds slowly, which is exactly why it's easy to miss.

The fix takes about thirty seconds. After every wet walk, work a towel between each toe, not just over the top of the paw. Your dog will be more comfortable, and your couch will thank you too.

Already doing all that and the licking hasn't stopped? That's worth a proper look.
Book a paw check with us, we're open every day until 11pm.

1.Your pet doesn’t have to finish every meal.
Forcing food can create picky eaters.
2. A wagging tail doesn’t always mean a happy pet.
Body language matters more than tail wagging.
3. If your pet suddenly stops asking for treats, don’t ignore it.
It can be an early sign of illness.
4. One skipped meal isn’t always an emergency... but in some pets, it is.
(Especially cats.)
5. Your dog’s bad breath isn’t “normal dog breath.”
It may indicate dental disease.
6. Obesity is one of the most common diseases I see-and it’s preventable.
7. Your pet may be dehydrated even if the water bowl isn’t empty.
8. Not every vomiting episode is caused by “something bad they ate.”
9. Your indoor cat still needs regular veterinary check-ups.
10. Your puppy doesn’t need more food... it needs the right food.
11. Supplements aren’t always beneficial. More isn’t better.
12. Your pet’s p**p tells you more about their health than you think.
13. Licking paws all the time isn’t a cute habit-it can be a sign something’s wrong.
14. Many pets are in pain without crying.
15. Annual blood tests aren’t just for old pets.
Pets rarely tell you with words. They tell you with changes in behavior. The earlier you notice them, the better the outcome
Most of this comes down to the same thing. You know your pet’s normal better than anyone. Trust it when it shifts.
