“If you’re a parent, chances are you’ve witnessed a tantrum or two in your day. We expect them in two-year-olds. But if your child reaches school age and meltdowns and outbursts are still frequent, it may be a sign that they have difficulty with emotional self-regulation.”

“Problems with self-regulation manifest in different ways depending on the child…”

Discover how to help your child develop self-regulation skills and regulate their emotions. Get self-regulation strategies for kids.

At ElevateMinds, we believe support works best when it is collaborative.

When families come through our doors, they are not just connecting with one professional or receiving a single assessment result. They are gaining access to a team with diverse areas of expertise, including psychology, counselling, mental health support, and education/learning strategy.

This collaborative approach allows us to look at the whole picture and work together to better understand each child, teen, or adult’s unique strengths and challenges.

For many families, one of the hardest parts after receiving a diagnosis is figuring out what comes next. At ElevateMinds, we aim to bridge that gap. In addition to assessment and diagnostic services, we can help guide families toward practical, evidence-based next steps and meaningful supports.

Whether that means counselling, executive functioning support, learning strategies, emotional regulation support, parent consultation, or skill-building interventions, our goal is to help individuals move forward with clarity, support, and confidence.

Because understanding is important, but ongoing support and intervention matter too. 💙

Assignments causing stress?

Many students aren't falling behind because they can’t do the work; they are having trouble getting started, and as tasks build up, it can quickly become overwhelming. If your teen is experiencing this, you’re not alone-this is one of the most common challenges we see.

Keeping up with assignments requires effective executive functioning skills. It involves planning, prioritizing, getting started, and following through…skills that don’t always come naturally.

Once work starts to accumulate, it can quickly become overwhelming. Your teen may avoid it, feel stuck, or shut down altogether. It is important to remember that it is generally not because they don’t care, but because they don’t know how to get started and stay on track.

Here are a few small ways to help at home:
Encourage a quick daily check-in on what’s due (rather than waiting until the end of the week)

Break larger assignments into smaller, more manageable steps

Focus on getting started, not finishing everything at once

Consider use of a visual timer to support task initiation

Use visual supports (lists, post-it notes, whiteboards, planners) to make tasks more concrete

Keep expectations realistic (momentum matters more than perfection)

Remember: helping them stay current is less about working harder and more about building systems that support follow-through.

“Sleep is essential, but many of us, kids and adults alike, don’t get enough of it. One of the best ways to get back on track is through better sleep hygiene. This means establishing habits that promote a good night’s sleep, like setting a routine.”

Tips for helping kids fall—and stay—asleep. Getting enough rest is important for mental health and well being. Encouraging good sleep habits.
