An upgrade to an Urgent Care Centre would be the best way to continue to deliver health care services to Sylvan Lake and Area.
What is the difference between our Sylvan Lake Advanced Ambulatory Care (SLAAC) and an Urgent Care Centre (UCC)? A lot!
When we initially advocated for a healthcare facility in Sylvan Lake, we sought an Urgent Care Centre, but the province opted for an Advanced Ambulatory Care model. Since opening in 2018, SLAAC has been a fantastic asset for our community, handling over 18,386 visits in 2023 alone! The demand for our services is clear and growing, with some days seeing over 80 patients.
Currently, SLAAC operates from 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., providing essential services supported by on-site lab and diagnostic imaging. However, we are beginning to see the limitations of these hours and services offered, which is why it’s time to advocate for a transition to a true Urgent Care Centre. This upgrade would mean expanded hours and staffing to meet the needs of our residents and neighbours.
Why Upgrade to UCC?
-Direct Ambulance Access: Unlike SLAAC, ambulances can go directly to a UCC for various types of care without prior clearance. Once an ambulance leaves our community, it can be hours before it’s back ready to serve Lakers for the next call.
-Expanded hours: A UCC would have hours extending past the current hours, because healthcare challenges don’t always happen before 10pm.
- Relieve Pressure on Red Deer’s Emergency Department: A UCC can handle urgent, non-life-threatening conditions, helping our neighboring facilities.
- Growing Demand: As we continue to experience an upward trend in patient visits, it’s clear our region relies heavily on this service.
While healthcare falls outside municipal jurisdiction, your voice matters! Here’s how you can help:
- Educate Yourself: Understand the differences between SLAAC and a UCC (and call it by the correct name when referring to our current service).
- Talk about it: If you’re speaking with provincial representatives, don’t hesitate to mention the pressing need for a true Urgent Care Centre in Sylvan Lake.
