Happy June! That means heartworm season has arrived! This warm weather brings mosquitos, and with mosquitos your pet is at risk of heartworm! 🦟🫀
Need a refresher on what heartworm is?
Heartworm (also known as Dirofilaria immitis) is a serious and potentially fatal disease that can be spread to your pet through mosquitos🦟
They are foot-long worms (gross right?) that live in the heart, lungs and associated blood vessels of affected pets, causing severe lung disease, heart failure and damage to other organs in the body.
If untreated, their numbers can increase, and cause lasting damage to the heart, lungs and arteries, and can affect the dog’s health and quality of life long after the parasites are gone. For this reason, prevention is by far the best option, as it is much easier to prevent heartworm than it is to treat it!
We recommended sending a blood sample out for a 4dx test to check for heartworm and other tick borne diseases before starting prevention, so we can get to treating it before symptoms progress too far!
