Happy Earth Day, a day we recognize our important role in environmental protection of our planet, as well as promoting conservation and demanding environmental reform. Top Tips for Enjoying Easter with Hearing Loss: * Wear and Maintain Your Devices: Use your hearing aids, as modern versions can filter background noise and focus on speech. If traveling, pack a “hearing aid kit” with a charger or batteries, spare domes, wax filters, and a cleaning kit. * Strategic Seating: At dinner, sit with your back to the rest of the venue to limit noise from other directions. Position yourself at the end of the table away from noisy areas like the kitchen. * Optimize Your Environment: Find quiet corners for conversation and avoid standing near speakers. Have you wondered what earwax is for, why we have it, and what to do if it’s excessive? Key Functions of Earwax Protection: It forms a waterproof lining and traps dust, debris, and microorganisms to prevent infection. Self-Cleaning: As skin cells in the canal move outward, they carry the wax and trapped particles toward the ear opening. Lubrication: It prevents the delicate skin of the ear canal from becoming dry, itchy, or irritated. Antimicrobial: Earwax is slightly acidic and contains proteins that fight off bacteria. Types and Genetics Your earwax type is genetically determined by the ABCC11 gene: Wet Earwax: Sticky and yellow to brown. This is a dominant trait common in people of European and African descent. Dry Earwax: Flaky, brittle, and gray to tan. This is a recessive trait common in people of East Asian and Indigenous descent. Why You Should Avoid Cotton Swabs! The most common cause of earwax blockage (impaction) is the use of cotton swabs. Instead of cleaning, swabs often: 👂🏻 Push wax deeper into the ear canal where it can’t naturally escape. 👂🏻 Risk puncturing the eardrum or scratching the delicate canal wall, leading to infection. 👂🏻 Disrupt the natural movement of tiny hairs that help move wax out. It’s best to have your Audiologist or Doctor let you know if your earwax is excessive and advise you of the best way to clear it out, if required! Too often we see patients who assumed they must have a lot of earwax, and inadvertently irritate their ear canals with invasive measures. This can be dangerous when done improperly! Remember: Everyone should have a ‘healthy and normal amount’ of earwax and it is NOT typically an indication of poor hygiene! Cognitive decline and its association with hearing is an issue that has been brought to the forefront of public health education in recent years more than ever. Current research strongly links hearing loss with a higher risk of cognitive decline and dementia. While not every person with hearing loss will develop these conditions, hearing loss is considered the largest modifiable risk factor for dementia, potentially accounting for approximately 8% of cases worldwide. Core Mechanisms of the Link: Experts suggest four primary theories explaining how hearing loss may impact cognitive health: Cognitive Load (Brain Strain): When hearing is impaired, the brain must work harder to process and “fill in” missing sounds. This extra effort diverts mental energy away from other critical functions like memory and problem-solving. Brain Structure Changes: Sensory deprivation from a lack of sound can cause the brain to shrink more quickly, particularly in the temporal lobe, which is responsible for speech, language, and memory. Social Isolation: Difficulty communicating often leads individuals to withdraw from social activities. This reduction in social engagement results in less intellectual stimulation, which is a known risk factor for cognitive decline. Common Cause: Some researchers believe an underlying third factor—such as vascular health issues (e.g., high blood pressure or diabetes) or inflammation—might independently damage both the inner ear and the brain. Hearing others well is a powerful way to show love and strengthen connections this Valentine’s Day. Focusing on active listening can be a more meaningful gift than any store-bought item. However, it can be difficult to do when you suffer from hearing loss. Ways to hear your loved one better: 1. Treat your hearing loss: The first step is a comprehensive hearing evaluation to see what type of communicative issues you might encounter based on your test results. Sometimes all the communication strategies in the world won’t be enough to help you fully engage in conversations. 2. Practice Active Listening: Lean in and minimize distractions - put away your phone and give your full attention to the person speaking. 3. Maintain eye contact: This signals that you are fully present and value what they are saying, while also preserving visual cues to augment the auditory information 4. Avoid interrupting: Allow them to finish their thoughts before you respond. If you need to clarify something, wait for a natural break in the conversation. Too often the person living with hearing loss compensates by doing more of the talking, given that listening is more difficult for them. We often are asked how to change the dome and wax guard on receiver-in-canal style hearing aids! Here is a short video demonstrating what to do! We are using the Oticon Intent hearing aids here. Changing the wax guard and dome on your Oticon Intent miniRITE R (Receiver-In-Canal) hearing aid is a simple, user-replaceable process that uses the included Prowax MiniFit tool. Step-by-Step Guide Changing the Wax Guard Remove the dome: Hold the receiver wire and, with a finger underneath the dome, pull it off the end of the receiver/speaker unit. It may require a firm pull. Prepare the tool: Take one black removal tool/stick from the Oticon Prowax MiniFit package. The tool has two ends: one empty barbed end for removal and one end with a new white wax guard attached. Remove the old wax guard: Push the empty, barbed pin of the tool straight into the center of the old, white wax guard located at the tip of the receiver until you feel a gentle click. Pull the tool straight out to remove the used guard. Do not twist the tool. Insert the new wax guard: Flip the tool to the other side. Push the new wax guard straight into the opening on the receiver. The new guard should pop into place. Discard the tool: The used wax guard will remain on the removal tool, which can now be discarded. Replacing the Dome Align the new dome: Take a new or clean dome. Locate the small circle in the center of the dome’s base, which needs to be aligned with the receiver tip. Attach the dome: Position the dome over the receiver and push it firmly into place. Secure the fit: Give the dome a gentle tug or press down on the top with your finger to ensure it is securely attached and won’t fall off in your ear.
