“Why didn’t anyone tell me this BEFORE menopause?”
I literally just got off the phone with another woman who said this to me.
She’s frustrated. And honestly, a little angry.
She feels like she went into perimenopause completely unprepared.
The anxiety showed up.
Her sleep changed.
Her body changed.
Her moods changed.
She stopped feeling like herself.
And nobody had ever really explained to her that these things could be connected to perimenopause.
So now she feels like she’s playing catch-up.
She’s seeing a naturopathic doctor.
She’s using HRT.
She’s doing talk therapy.
She’s actively managing her stress.
She’s doing a LOT of the right things.
But she still doesn’t feel like she’s quite there yet.
And as we talked, I kept thinking about the piece that so often gets missed:
Nutrition.
Not another diet.
Not counting calories.
Not “eat less and exercise more.”
Actually looking at whether the body has the nutritional building blocks it needs to function well.
Something as simple as potassium is a good example.
Potassium plays an important role in nerve signalling, muscle function and cardiovascular health. When intake is inadequate, symptoms can overlap with things women may already be experiencing — including fatigue, weakness or heart palpitations, which can sometimes feel a lot like anxiety.
That doesn't mean potassium is the cause of anxiety.
It means we need to stop looking at every symptom in isolation.
Hormones matter.
Therapy matters.
Stress management matters.
HRT can matter.
And nutrition is the foundation underneath all of it.
This is why I wish we started educating women about perimenopause before they were knee-deep in it.
You shouldn't have to hit 45 or 50, suddenly not recognize yourself, and then start Googling, “What the heck is happening to me?”
And if you're already there, you haven't missed your chance.
Maybe it's simply time to start looking at your body from another angle. 🌿
