Canada is in the midst of a national overdose crisis, and opioids continue to have a devastating impact on communities across the country.

Understanding overdose prevention means looking beyond substance use itself and recognizing the factors that can make people more vulnerable.

Poverty, homelessness and trauma can increase vulnerability to substance use while making healthcare and support more difficult to access.

Mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety and unresolved trauma can often occur alongside substance use.

Stigma and discrimination may prevent people from reaching out for help due to fear of judgement.

Rural and remote barriers can make accessing harm reduction services, addiction care and emergency support more challenging - especially for those living in isolated communities.

By recognizing these challenges and supporting a more compassionate approach, we can help reduce stigma, improve access to care and make a difference in our communities.
