Today, if we had a flag, it would be at half-mast in honour of our Sister and Friend who lost her life last night in a terrible accident in her home community. Sheena made all the Pan Am guys a keychain. Nobody asked her to. She didn’t want anything for them. It was simply her idea and her effort.

She made them for the staff at the home too, and she made me a double headdress. I finally asked her what she would normally charge. She said $10.

And that stayed with me. Ten dollars might mean very little to some of us. To someone who has so little, it can mean a great deal. So I bought them from her. I don’t say that looking for any credit — the money is irrelevant compared with what her gesture showed about her heart.

Then Doreen told me something I hadn’t known. Sheena was returning home with nowhere to go because her house had burned down.

Think about that for a moment. While carrying that kind of uncertainty and struggle in her own life, she was spending her time making something for other people.

And now she is gone.

I spend a lot of my life talking about struggle, resilience, mindset and continuing forward when life gets hard. But there are moments when I don’t think you should try to turn struggle into a lesson or give it some neat meaning.

Sometimes life is simply unbearably unfair.

What I can say is that Sheena mattered. In five short weeks, she left something behind in the people around her. She gave when she had very little herself. She showed up with energy. She cared about people.

Maybe that is the part worth holding onto.

Her circumstances never got to decide the size of her heart.
