Do you know the Grasp Bird’s Tail? Some people call it Grasping Peacock’s Tail.

Grasping Peacock’s Tail (揽雀尾, Lǎn Què Wěi) is a common movement found in many styles of Qigong and Taiji. It is a graceful and powerful movement that helps open the chest, strengthen the arms and shoulders, and improve balance and coordination.

Here are some of the benefits of practising Grasping Peacock’s Tail:

• Opens the chest and shoulders, improving flexibility and range of motion: The movement helps expand the chest and stretch the shoulders, supporting flexibility and range of motion in the upper body.

• Strengthens the arms and shoulders: Grasping Peacock’s Tail involves coordinated movements of the arms and shoulders, helping to develop strength through regular practice.

• Improves balance and coordination: The movement requires the body to maintain balance while turning and shifting weight, helping to develop balance and coordination.

• Promotes relaxation and stress relief: The slow and flowing movements can help promote relaxation and reduce stress.

• Supports the flow of Qi throughout the body: In Qigong and Taiji practice, the movement is used to encourage the smooth flow of Qi through the body.

In addition to its physical benefits, practising movements like Grasping Peacock’s Tail can also support mental focus and relaxation. The slow coordination of movement, balance, and attention creates an opportunity to slow down and become more aware of the body.

Have you practised Grasping Peacock’s Tail before? We’d love to hear about your experience in the comments. ☯️

Even when Tai Chi reaches moderate aerobic intensity, it doesn’t feel like jogging or cycling because:
Heart rate rises gently, not sharply,
Breathing stays natural and calm,
Movements are slow, continuous, and low‑impact,
The nervous system shifts toward parasympathetic (“rest and digest”) activation rather than “fight or flight”

People often underestimate its cardiovascular effect — the internal load is higher than the external appearance.
