Mamie Phipps Clark was the first female Black psychologist to earn a PhD in experimental psychology. She graduated from Columbia University in New York in 1943.

Dr. Clark and her husband would go on to conduct on of the most well-known early experiments in psychology on racism - the doll experiments - in which children were shown White dolls and Black dolls and were asked which ones were 'nice' and which ones were 'bad'. What the study identified was the internalized racial preferences of both White and Black children and the early formation of internalized racism. This formative experimental study informed much of what we know today about racial biases.

The first ever Black person to earn a doctoral degree in Psychology was Francis Cecil Sumner. His parents homeschooled him because they worried about the quality of the education he was receiving at the elementary school they were sending him to. He later applied to Lincoln College, a historically Black university, which is now known as Lincoln University. He passed the entrance examination and began his education at the age of 15, graduation as valedictorian at age 19 with an undergraduate degree in Philosophy. Sumner went on to do a second Bachelor degree at Clark University under the mentorship of pioneering psychologist G. Stanley Hall.

Sumner was drafted into the military in 1918 and served in Germany during the First World War. Once he returned, he completed his doctoral degree in 1920. Dr. Sumner's studies were focused on differences of mental health in Caucasians and Black individuals and perceptions of justice-involved Black people.

Dr. Sumner applied for membership with the Souther Society for Philosophy and Psychology and had all the requisite qualifications, including endorsement of two existing members. Initially, his application was denied, however, when the SSPP changed its bylaws specifically to exclude Black members. Existing members protested this change and threatened to resign, so eventually Dr. Sumner's application was approved and the 'error' was blamed on a secretary.

Dr. Sumner made many contributions to the field of psychology throughout his career and was an influential leader and thinker in the field. He has often been referred to as the ‘Father of Black Psychology’.

Jonathan previously worked as a teacher, teaching a range of grades and subjects, from Junior Kindergarten to university-level courses. He discovered his passion for helping others while working with a particularly unruly class full of behavioural problems and discovering that it was really just children who needed extra support and care. Jonathan is passionate about helping others live the best version of their lives that they can.

February is Black History Month. I like to highlight trailblazing Black Women in Psychology Drs. Ruth Winifred Howard and Inez Beverly Prosser, two of the first Black female Clinical Psychologists.

Dr. Ruth Winifred Howard received her PhD in Psychology and Child Development from the University of Minnesota in 1934. Dr. Howard completed a doctoral dissertation on the development of triplets, theorizing that multiples were less developed than singleton pregnancies. She went on to work in private practice at a clinic she operated with her husband. She also held a staff position at the Provident Hospital School of Nursing where she trained Black nurses. Dr. Howard held various positions throughout her career and was well-regarded, training future clinicians, psychologists and nurses.

Dr. Inez Beverly Prosser is often regarded as the first Black female psychologist in the United States. Dr. Prosser completed dissertation research on the impacts of racism and segregation in the educational setting on educational achievement of Black students. She challenged ideas that integration was always good for Black children. For the purpose of her research, Dr. Prosser developed a number of tools to measure personality and emotional responses. Her research shifted considerations of school functioning of that time, which otherwise focused primarily on academic achievement.

Psychology has rich histories of contributions from brilliant Black Psychologists, past and present. We will highlight them throughout the month.
