What does a bottom-up, client-centred approach actually mean — and why does it matter?

It means we don’t decide how we’re going to treat you before we understand you.

At Oak & Rose Counselling, assessment starts with the whole person. We want to understand what brought you to therapy, your symptoms and concerns, your history and experiences, your relationships and environment, your strengths, your goals, and what you have access to in terms of time, finances and benefits.

Why? Because the same symptom can have very different roots — and two people experiencing the same problem may need very different kinds of support.

A history of trauma, for example, doesn’t automatically mean EMDR is the right starting point. Anxiety doesn’t automatically mean CBT. A diagnosis alone doesn’t tell us everything we need to know about the person sitting in front of us.

Once we have a fuller understanding of you and what you hope to change, we can recommend evidence-informed treatment options that make sense for your needs, preferences and circumstances.

It also means continually evaluating the work: Is this helping? Do we need to adjust? Is another approach, provider or level of care more appropriate?

Because good mental health care isn’t about fitting people into our favourite modality.

We believe the treatment should fit the person — not the person fit the treatment.

We don’t start with a modality. We start with you.

When you come to counselling at Oak & Rose, we begin by listening.

We take the time to understand who you are, what brought you to counselling, the nature of what you’re experiencing, and what you hope will be different. Together, we identify your goals and develop a treatment plan that also considers practical realities like your benefits, budget, and how much therapy you can realistically access.

Then, we consider which therapeutic approach may actually be the best fit.

Having experienced trauma, for example, doesn’t automatically mean you’ll receive the trauma modality your therapist happens to be most comfortable providing.

We draw from different evidence-informed approaches and recommend the modality — or combination of modalities — that we believe is most likely to help you experience meaningful relief and movement toward your goals.

And that plan can change as we get to know you better.

Our clinicians also engage in regular consultation and clinical supervision to help us remain thoughtful about bias, practise within our scope, and ensure the work continues to be guided by the best interests of the client.

Because good therapy isn’t about fitting people into a treatment model.

It’s about finding the treatment that fits the person.

If this sounds like the kind of mental health care you want for yourself or your teenager, we invite you to connect with Oak & Rose Counselling.

We love a kinda chic moment. But trend aside — taking care of your mental health has never needed to be fashionable.

Therapy can be messy, uncomfortable, funny, validating, frustrating and deeply human.

It’s learning why you do what you do.
Noticing the patterns you keep repeating.
Setting boundaries without writing a three-paragraph apology afterward.
And slowly creating a life that feels more like yours.

So yes, therapy is kinda chic.

But feeling more at home in yourself?
That’s bigger than a trend. 🌹

She’s 9, 11, 13… and suddenly she’s talking about her body differently.

“I look fat.”

“My stomach is huge.”

“I don’t want to wear that.”

“Everyone else is skinnier than me.”

And as her mom, your heart sinks.

Because you know where this can go.

Maybe you’ve spent years criticizing your own body. Maybe food, weight and dieting have taken up far too much space in your own life.

And now you’re wondering:

How do I make sure she doesn’t inherit this?

You cannot control every message your daughter will receive about her body.

But you can change the messages she receives at home.

You can learn what to say when she criticizes her body.

You can recognize when normal insecurity is becoming something more concerning.

You can help her understand comparison, beauty standards, social media and diet culture.

And you can model a relationship with your own body that isn’t built around constantly trying to make it smaller.

That’s part of why I created Embodiment & Body Image — a self-paced course for women, teens, and women raising girls.

It’s not about teaching your daughter to love every inch of herself.

It’s about something deeper:

Helping her understand that her body was never supposed to determine her worth in the first place.

And sometimes, raising a daughter changes the way we look at our own bodies too.

Because suddenly, the things we would never want her to believe…

are the same things we’ve been saying to ourselves for years.

Let’s change what gets passed down. 🌹

As a former eating disorder clinician, one of the most heartbreaking patterns I witnessed was how many athletes believed their worth depended on the number on a scale.

Sport can build confidence, discipline, resilience, and lifelong friendships. But when body size becomes the focus, the very thing that once brought joy can become a source of shame.

Whether you’re an athlete, parent, coach, or teammate, your words matter.

Let’s raise athletes who believe their value comes from their courage, commitment, and character—not their weight.

If body image, food, or performance anxiety is affecting your life, you don’t have to navigate it alone.

🌿 Oak & Rose Counselling provides evidence-based psychotherapy for teens (14+) and adults experiencing body image concerns, disordered eating, anxiety, trauma, and sport-related mental health.

Stop blaming your willpower.
Binge eating isn’t a lack of discipline—it’s often a coping strategy.
Healing doesn’t happen through another diet. It happens through connection.

As a clinician who spent years treating eating disorders, one thing became unmistakably clear: while individual therapy is incredibly valuable, group-based healing is often the missing piece for people struggling with binge eating.

That’s why I created Breaking Free from Binge Eating—an evidence-informed 8-week recovery group for adults (18+) designed to help you build a peaceful relationship with food, your body, and yourself.

✨ You’ll learn to:
• Break the binge–restrict cycle
• Reduce shame and self-criticism
• Regulate emotions without using food
• Build self-compassion and body trust
• Develop practical ACT, CBT-E, and DBT skills
