In Japanese style acupuncture, "hara" or abdominal diagnosis is used to determine the underlying internal imbalances causing the condition or symptoms.

The reflex associated with the cardiovascular system, is related to the heart organ in Oriental Medicine. This reflex is located below the xiphoid process, just below the rib cage in the centre of the abdomen.

In Oriental Medicine, the heart is also connected with the mind/spirit, therefore mental emotional symptoms may also be associated with this reflex.

Signs and symptoms associated with an active Heart reflex include:

- Insomnia
- Anxiety
- Poor mental factualities (concentration, “brain fog”)
- Heart palpitations
- Cardiovascular disease
- Circulatory issues

These symptoms plus tenderness, tightness or weakness upon palpation in this area can indicate imbalances in this system.

Our nervous systems are constantly responding to our environment. We take in information from our senses and adapt to these stimuli.

High beta brain wave states are often associated with activation of the sympathetic nervous system ("fight or flight" response). When in this state, our physiology shifts into an emergency protection system. In this state we are constantly processing the sensory information from our environment which can induce feelings of anxiety.

This is the opposite of the physiological state which occurs during periods of alpha waves.

Alpha brain wave states produce coherent, orderly and synchronized signals to the body that allows the brain to organize all the body's systems (cardiovascular, endocrine, digestive, immune and so on) into homeostasis or balance.

For healing, we need to shift our physiology from the sympathetic protective state to the coherent, orderly parasympathetic state that allows for our bodies long term building mechanisms such as growth and repair.

Acupuncture treatments decrease beta waves and increase alpha waves, showing synchronization of brain wave states during treatment. This highlights acupuncture's effect on the central nervous system.

In Japanese style acupuncture, "hara" or abdominal diagnosis is used to determine the underlying internal imbalances causing the condition or symptoms.

The reflex associated with the reproductive system, adrenals (stress response) and bladder are related to the Kidney organ in Oriental Medicine. This reflex is located below the belly button, extending across the lower abdomen.

Signs and symptoms associated with an active Kidney reflex include:

- Ovarian cysts
- Bloating (related to stress and cortisol)
- Adrenal fatigue
- Menstrual Irregularities (irregular periods, painful periods)
- Fibroids
- Endometriosis
- Visceroptosis
- Renal disease

These symptoms plus tenderness, tightness or weakness upon palpation in this area can indicate imbalances in these systems.

What’s the difference?

Though Japanese style acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine are rooted in shared concepts, theory and use of acupuncture points, there are some differences between the two styles of acupuncture.

Check it out on my recent blog (link in bio) which highlights some of these differences.
