When we talk about developing independence in autistic children, one of the most widely used, evidence-based approaches is ABA therapy. A common question parents ask is: where do we start?

ABA is tailored to each child’s developmental stage, age, and individual needs. Understanding these differences can make a huge impact on your child’s progress.

👶 Young children (2–3 years old)
At this stage, the focus is on building foundations. Programs typically target essential skills such as:
• Joint attention
• Early communication
• Reducing behaviors that interfere with learning
• Simple play and social interaction
• Early independence in small routines

Here, the goal isn’t full independence yet—it’s developing the prerequisites that will support it later. Learning happens through play, repetition, and positive reinforcement.

👦 Older children (8–9 years old)
For older children, the program takes on a different level of complexity. Many foundational skills are already in place, and the focus becomes more functional and practical:
• Self-care
• More complex social skills

We speak of the daily, relentless, and often unseen struggle of families who never give up. Families who face barriers just to secure the basics: respect, true inclusion, quality education, and access to dignified, consistent, and truly effective care.

This is not about minimal adaptation. It is about social transformation. It is about breaking down prejudice, confronting neglect, and demanding policies and practices that honor the uniqueness and potential of every autistic person.

At CRC Clinic, we are not on the sidelines of this reality — we are in it, standing side by side with every family, listening, supporting, and advocating. We understand that inclusion cannot be an empty statement: it must be lived, built, and defended every single day.
