“You’re telling me you can help me over text, right now?”
That’s what a downtown Toronto nurse texted me last Tuesday, 9pm, dead tired, worried she had pink eye with a 12-hour shift starting at 7am.
She said the walk-in would take 3 hours. The clinic was closed. And she had no idea if it was contagious or not.
I asked her a few questions over text, colour of discharge, any itchiness, light sensitivity. Turned out it was viral, not bacterial. No antibiotic needed. Just supportive care and she could work her shift without infecting anyone.
She went in informed, not panicked.
That’s the whole point: get the right answer fast, in your pyjamas, without losing a night’s sleep.
