Did you know the European Association of Breastfeeding Medicine (EABM) was born out of the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine's regional meetings in Europe?

In a recent interview, EABM President Mónica Pina shared how the organization is working to advance physician education, support research, and build a strong network of breastfeeding medicine leaders across Europe—and how collaboration with ABM continues to grow.

Together, we're stronger. 🌍

Car seats are one of the most effective tools we have to protect children from serious injury and death, but all the recommendations can feel overwhelming. AAP past president Dr. Ben Hoffman joined Dr. Edith Bracho-Sanchez on a recent episode of the Healthy Children podcast to talk about which types of car seats protect your child at each stage of development and how these recommendations can prevent injuries and death in a crash. Tune in wherever you get your podcasts.

Vitamin K is a fat-soluble nutrient that helps our bodies make blood clots that we need to stop bleeding. Adults and older children get vitamin K from food such as green, leafy vegetables, meat, dairy and eggs. The healthy bacteria in our intestines, which make up our microbiome, also produce some vitamin K.

Babies, though, have very little vitamin K in their bodies at birth, which puts them at risk for dangerous vitamin K deficiency bleeding (VKDB). AAP recommends all newborns receive the vitamin K injection at birth to prevent VKDB. Read more in our fact check. https://bit.ly/4a4T1jk

Why is tongue elevation key to effective nursing? 👅

Without full range of motion of the tongue, the mechanics of breastfeeding suffer and either the baby or mom (or both) will have to compensate for this.

Sometimes those compensations are able to overcome the issues and sustain good nursing✨

Other times, the dysfunction is so severe that the well-being of the mother and baby are compromised.

A tongue tie is a “tethered” tongue—meaning the tongue is tied down to the floor of the mouth. This doesn’t necessarily prevent the tongue from sticking out or moving side-to-side, but it does prevent it from fully elevating.

Did you already know this about tongue tie? 👅

Thanks 🤍 for this great post!

What I see more often in the clinic: a shallow latch as a compensation for the baby to create a better suction and drain better, I usually explain this with my hands and crochet babies, from now on I’m definitely going to be using this great visual! 🤩

Did someone tell you that breastfeeding hurts?

That your ni***es will crack like everyone else? 😬

Yes, pain when breastfeeding is COMMON, but not NORMAL.☝🏻

It is common because many times we don’t have access to lactation consultants in all hospitals, because unfortunately many health professionals don’t get updated on breastfeeding medicine and advise families badly.

It is common because people tell us that it is normal and the word spreads, causing many moms not to seek help and give up instead.😥

If we all had trained lactation professionals accompanying us from pregnancy, pain when breastfeeding would not be COMMON.

Because simply BREASTFEEDING SHOULD NOT HURT. If it hurts, it is because maybe something needs to be fixed, something is wrong. 🔎

In breastfeeding, most of the difficulties have a solution, and almost always a simple solution. What is needed is information and available support. 💛

If you are reading this and you’re having pain when breastfeeding, you have cracked ni***es, and you are about to give up ... I was there too! 🙌🏻 about to throw in the towel, and they also told me that it was normal! It wasn’t until I sought help that in a couple of days everything looked much better, and we had a 3 year breastfeeding journey after that 💛
