Back-to-school anxiety does not always sound like “I’m worried.”

It may look like repeated questions, trouble sleeping, stomach aches, avoiding anything school-related or having a big reaction to a seemingly small unknown.

These behaviours are not your children being difficult. They may be signs that your child is looking for safety, predictability, reassurance and support as September approaches.

Start with curiosity. Help them name the part that feels hard, listen without rushing to fix it and make a plan together.

If your child could use more support, our Back-to-School Confidence program helps children ages 6–10 understand their worries, build confidence and practise strategies for difficult school moments.

Join us August 24–28 at our Woodbine & Danforth location. Learn more or register now on the link in our bio.

When a task feels too big, even a child who understands the work may struggle to begin.

They might stare at the page, avoid getting started, become frustrated or quickly decide, “I can’t do this.”

Often, the problem is not ability. Your child may not yet know how to make the task feel manageable.

Children can learn practical strategies to:

• break larger tasks into smaller steps
• identify where to begin
• make a simple plan
• move through frustration or mistakes
• recognize when they need help
• build confidence by noticing their progress

Instead of saying, “Just get started,” try:

"What is one small step you could take first?”

Breaking the task down into smaller chunks not only helps make larger tasks feel more manageable, but it will help your child find a place to begin.

Mindset for School Success helps children ages 8–11 learn strategies for approaching difficult tasks, managing challenging moments and building confidence in their ability to keep going.

The transition to high school is about so much more than finding a new classroom.

For autistic and neurodivergent teens, Grade 9 can bring new routines, multiple teachers, changing expectations, increased sensory demands and much more responsibility for staying organized and asking for help.

These skills do not always develop automatically, but they can be taught, practised and strengthened.

Our High School Transition Workshop will help teens prepare for the practical realities of Grade 9, including:

🌿 Planning and organization
🌿 Navigating new routines
🌿 Recognizing and managing overwhelm
🌿 Asking for help and advocating for their needs
🌿 Responding flexibly when things do not go according to plan
🌿 And how to find their people!

Through practical activities, guided discussion and real-life strategies, teens will leave feeling more prepared, capable and confident about the transition ahead. Each creating a "High School Success Plan" as part of the workshop.

Growing up comes with new expectations, but not every teen gets the chance to learn the skills that make everyday life feel more manageable.

Our Life Skills for Teens program is designed for autistic and neurodivergent teens who are ready to build confidence, strengthen executive functioning, practice self-advocacy, and develop practical skills for greater independence.

Through engaging, therapist-led activities, teens have the opportunity to:
🌿 Strengthen emotional regulation
🌿 Build communication and relationship skills
🌿 Practice problem-solving and decision-making
🌿 Develop organization and daily living skills
🌿 Connect with peers in a supportive, neurodiversity-affirming environment

Because becoming more independent isn’t about changing who you are—it’s about building the tools to thrive as yourself.

As another school year comes to a close, we hope you’ll take a moment to celebrate the growth that can’t always be measured by grades or reflected on a report card. 💚

Maybe your child learned to make a new friend.

Maybe they found the confidence to raise their hand in class.

Maybe they asked for help when they needed it, worked through big emotions, or simply kept showing up on the hard days.

Those moments matter.

And parents, so do all the ways you showed up this year!

From early mornings and packed lunches to homework, appointments, encouragement, and endless support, your efforts have helped shape your child’s journey in more ways than you know.

We hope this summer brings your family time to slow down, reconnect, make memories, and simply enjoy being together.

Wishing all of our Willow Tree families a safe, joyful, and well-deserved summer. 🌿☀️
