I used to look at them and think, โ€œWho are these people?โ€ ๐Ÿ˜‚

Because some of the things my daughter gets away with would've never worked when I was growing up.

But real, REAL talk as a first-time mom and a therapist:

The older I get, the less I see it as grandparents being softer.

I see it as life looking different.

My parents aren't raising a child while building a life, managing responsibilities, making difficult decisions, and carrying everything they were carrying back then.

And honestly, becoming a mom has made me realize how much context matters when we're judging the people who raised us.

One of the biggest gifts of motherhood has been seeing my parents not just as my parents, but as people.

YOUR BODY MAY STILL BE RESPONDING TO WHAT HAS ALREADY PASSED.

Trauma can look like feeling tired all the time, staying in โ€œgo mode,โ€ struggling to relax, shutting down emotionally, or feeling stressed even when your surroundings feel safe now.

People often judge themselves for these reactions without realizing their nervous system learned them through survival.

This blog explores how trauma shapes the body, the nervous system, and the way people respond to stress long after the experience passes.

One of the fastest ways to tell me someone has never worked closely with athletes is when they reduce mental health breaks to a lack of toughness.

Most athletes are not struggling because they are mentally weak. If anything, many have spent years becoming exceptionally good at pushing through discomfort, suppressing emotions, carrying pressure, and continuing to perform when things are not okay.

The problem is that those same skills that help athletes succeed can also make it harder to recognize when something needs attention.

Athletes are often rewarded for staying quiet, staying available, and staying focused no matter what is happening behind the scenes. Eventually, some begin treating every sign of exhaustion, anxiety, overwhelm, or emotional strain as something to beat rather than something to understand.

As an athlete therapist, I can tell you that the conversation is rarely about whether someone can handle pressure. Most athletes have been handling pressure for years.

We didn't wake up one day and decide to think this way.

Some of these came from love.
Some came from survival.
Some came from watching the people before us do the best they could with what they had.

But just because something was passed down doesn't mean it has to be carried forever.

You can love your family and still say no.
You can appreciate the sacrifices that came before you and still want more for yourself.

You don't have to throw away where you came from.
You just get to decide what comes with you moving forward.

11/24 done, getting closer to a blackout 2026 bingo card โšซ๏ธ

Looking back at this list made me realize how much of the year has been shaped by actually trying things instead of just thinking about them.

And I just want you to know that every time you try something new, you create space for a different way of showing up in your life.

So, โœจ TRY โœจ

This can still be the start for you. โ™ฅ๏ธ

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and a lot of reflection this month has been about timing โ€” what people keep putting off, and what they already feel ready for.

Thereโ€™s a point where thinking starts to feel like action waiting to happen. Where the idea of doing something stays close, even when it hasnโ€™t happened yet.

That pull usually says more than we give it credit for.

To the high performers,

Most of you donโ€™t struggle with ambition. You know how to show up, deliver, and keep things moving.

Whatโ€™s harder is what happens in between.

Weโ€™ve learned this the hard way in high-performance spaces: you can be consistent, visible, and productiveโ€ฆ and still be running on empty.

And I know slowing down can feel like youโ€™re losing progress. Like youโ€™re stepping away from everything youโ€™ve worked so hard to build.

But what Iโ€™ve seen, both personally and in the people Iโ€™ve worked with, is that rest is rarely about stopping.

Itโ€™s about making sure you donโ€™t have to break to continue.

To every Black woman navigating high-performance spaces right now:

I hope you continue to make room for yourself alongside everything you carry.

Your presence brings perspective.
Your voice creates impact.
Your leadership reaches further than you realize.

There is so much strength in the way Black women continue to show up with excellence, care, wisdom, creativity, and resilience across every room they walk into.

And while high-performance spaces often celebrate productivity, titles, and outcomes, there is also power in softness, joy, rest, community, and being fully seen as a person beyond performance.

I hope you continue choosing the version of success that feels whole, sustainable, and aligned for you.

The rooms you walk into shift because you are in them.
The conversations change because your voice is part of them.
And the space you take up continues to open doors for others, too.

What happens after you finish the work?

Sometimes what looks like delay, overchecking, or holding things back connects to imposter syndrome and how we experience visibility and pressure around performance.

There are moments where something is already done, but it still feels like it needs more time before it can be shared or submitted. In many cases, this shows up in everyday work, decisions, and how people relate to their own output.

This is something I explore in workshops and talks with organizations, especially around productivity, confidence, and how people build trust in their own work over time.

If youโ€™re looking for workshops, panels, or conversations that feel real, relatable, and spark meaningful reflection in teams, Iโ€™d love to connect.

Whatโ€™s your version of summer R&R looking like? โ˜€

Summer often brings conversations about rest, slowing down, and trying to find a bit more balance in how we move through life.

For many people, that looks like travel, time near water, reconnecting with themselves, and creating space away from constant pressure and overstimulation.

Rest can meet you in any season.

Therapy can also be part of that process โ€” a space to pause, reflect, and understand whatโ€™s been weighing on you, so your rest feels more intentional and supported.

If youโ€™ve been needing that kind of space, weโ€™re here.
