Broken sleep changes everything.
Your patience.
Your anxiety.
Your ability to think clearly.
New parents are often told to focus on feeding schedules and sleep training for the baby… but protecting your sleep matters just as much.
I talk about this a lot more in the full video on postpartum mental health.

It’s on my YouTube if you want the deeper conversation.
And if you’re already in the thick of postpartum and struggling, please don’t white-knuckle it.

One of the biggest misconceptions in postpartum mental health:
That love should cancel out everything else.

But real experiences often look like:

“I love my baby… and I’m struggling.”
“I’m grateful… and I feel lost.”
“I chose this… and I’m overwhelmed.”

Two things can be true.
If you’ve felt this, there is nothing wrong with you.
Save this as a reminder for the days that feel heavier.

Language plays an important role in how people experience healthcare. In pregnancy and postpartum care, traditional language often assumes that every birthing parent identifies as a mother.
However, some parents identify as transgender, non-binary, or gender diverse, and gendered language can make healthcare spaces feel exclusionary or invalidating.
Inclusive language helps create environments where parents feel respected, which can positively influence perinatal mental health and postpartum wellbeing.
When healthcare providers use affirming and inclusive language, they help ensure that every parent feels safe and supported during pregnancy and postpartum care.
Supporting LGBTQ+ parents begins with recognizing the diversity of identities and families.

In North America, Black women are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes compared to white women. These disparities reflect long-standing systemic inequities in healthcare access, treatment, and safety.

Experiences of stress, hypervigilance, and fear during pregnancy can have real impacts on perinatal mental health, including anxiety, trauma, and emotional overwhelm.

Maternal mental health is deeply connected to physical safety, trust in healthcare systems, and feeling heard during pregnancy and postpartum care.

Supporting parents means addressing both mental health and systemic barriers to care.
Every parent deserves safe, compassionate, and equitable support during pregnancy and postpartum.
