Did you know myopia in Canadian kids has doubled in one generation -- and it's not only because of genetics?
Something changed, and it started before screens were everywhere.
Here's what the research actually shows.
The two biggest drivers are surprisingly simple:
- Less time outside (sunlight plays a direct role in healthy eye development)
- More near work from a younger age (reading, tablets, close focus for hours at a time)
The part most parents don't know: Myopia isn't just about blurry vision. Every step of progression increases the risk of serious eye disease later in life -- retinal detachment, glaucoma, macular degeneration. The higher the prescription, the higher the risk.
Here's the good news: there's a window to slow it down. Myopia management works best before age 14, when the eye is still developing. After that, the options narrow.
If your child squints at the board, sits too close to the TV, or complains of headaches after school -- that's your sign.
We offer myopia management at our Midtown Toronto location. Not a prescription and a see-you-in-a-year. An actual plan.
DM us MYOPIA, and we'll walk you through the options.
