36 hours in Rome where the tonarelli is superior, the monuments are better at night and I do in fact book my hotel based on proximity to Sant'Eustachio Il Caffè and Antico Forno Roscioli for my morning coffee and bakery run. 🇮🇹

🍕 I get the feeling that this is essentially the Cheesecake Factory of Rome but even still, the Al dente tonarelli and pomodoro on the pizza are better than most in North America.

☕️ I wasn't kidding when I said I plan my trip around Sant'Eustachio Il Caffè . Went twice in 36h and always wish I could go more. My favourite morning coffee is the moretta followed by an afternoon mousse al caffe.

Blown away by how juicy the chicken was underneath this lava stream of vodka sauce and mozzarella. Truthfully I didn't love anything else I tried but would go back for this chicken parm alone. 🍗🍅🧀

I came to Albania for the beaches, but found so much more. My only regret is not staying longer in more cities. Highlights from the non-beach towns 🇦🇱 GJIROKASTËR - BLUE EYE - TIRANË - SHALA RIVER 🇦🇱

🫓 Byrektore Dauti makes fresh, triangle-shaped byrek in small batches that sell out within minutes. They’re just €1 each and I tried the spinach and onion. The sweet onion filling was unlike any other byrek I tried in Albania and easily one of my favourites.

🍮 Oshaf - Gjirokastër’s dessert, made with dried figs and milk. It’s lightly sweet and gives a little rice pudding. I found it at a tiny unnamed bakery tucked into the corner of the old bazaar. Worth trying while wandering around!

🥖 Albanian street food Bukë e Gjath from Mrizi i Zanave ®️ Buk & Gjath, which literally means “bread and cheese.” They scoop out the centre of a loaf, bake it in a wood-fired oven until the crust gets incredibly crackly, then fill it with creamy, mild cheese and homemade sausage. It looks a bit like raclette when served, but tastes completely different. The cheese, sausage and crushed walnuts on top were so good. I also tried the sweet version with figs, walnuts and yogurt, which was just as delicious.

💎 Shala River is an absolute must in northern Albania. The turquoise water surrounded by mountains is some of the most insane scenery I’ve ever seen. I stayed at Te Konaku on Komani Lake, which has an incredible setting right on the water. The local lake fish was cooked perfectly, but the menu is super limited and the owner was pretty unpleasant and not very accommodating, which took away from the experience.
⚠️ When visiting Shala River from here, you’ll need to bring your luggage, carry it over some rocky terrain and keep an eye on it all day, when it could have easily stayed at the hotel 😡. Still 100% worth seeing, just plan for the luggage situation.

🍽️ ERA Restaurant Pizzeria in Tiranë served one of my favourite meals, with authentic Albanian food including qofta with yogurt and pistachios, plus a cheese and pepper dip. Definitely worth adding to your Tiranë food list.
