Pine River Institute

Pine River Institute A treatment program for youth struggling with addictive behaviours and other mental health issues.

Former Director of Operations John Fallis shared memories from Pine River's early years at our event last week.

John was a member of the Pine River Advisory Committee for three years before becoming the Executive Director of Operations, a role in which he served faithfully and fully from 2008 to 2022. John was an enthusiastic supporter of Pine River in the educational community, and in the Mulmur neighbourhood.

Reflecting on the dedication of youth, families, and staff, John reminded us of something equally important at last weeks event: the joy that was found along the way. As John shared, "It was important to just let loose a bit and just enjoy each other's company."

A new UBC study about dependency found that some AI users experience symptoms similar to behavioural addiction: constant preoccupation, emotional distress when not using chatbots, and difficulty stopping.

Young people seek comfort in all sorts of places, including AI. Researchers say the instant responses, emotional validation, and human-like conversations make AI uniquely addictive. While AI can be a helpful tool, it cannot replace human connection, community, or care.

As part of our 20th anniversary year, members of our Caregiver Advisory Council hosted a special gathering in Toronto, bringing together alumni parents and caregivers from across Pine River Institute's history.

The evening was an opportunity to reconnect, reflect on shared experiences, and celebrate the many families who have helped shape our community over the past two decades.

Twenty years later, that spirit of connection, laughter, and community remains at the heart of what we do.

One of the most significant things that differentiates Pine River’s program is our emphasis on family work: the Parallel Process.

Parents and their children work alongside each other through the Four Phases of their Pine River journey. Our experience and our evaluation outcomes have taught us that the greater the engagement and self-growth of parents/guardians, the greater the success a youth will experience after their stay on campus.

Our young people are volunteering at Kyon Kennels every week during the month of May, soaking up precious moments with these cute pups.

We are incredibly grateful to our local partners for this opportunity. Community involvement for our youth is an important part of our program. And, I mean, who doesn't love spending time with a bunch of adorable puppies?

Sometimes the hardest decisions are the ones that ask us to take a leap into the unknown—but they can also be the most rewarding.

When young people attend Pine River, their parents do the work too. We walk alongside them as they courageously learn about themselves, look at their past relationships within their own families, and begin a new relationship with their child.

Parents have to do the work too, it's not just young people. Based on our evidence-informed practice, our webinars extend our experise into schools, workplaces, and communities to better equip parents with the tools they need to support youth.

Across Canada, schools and families are seeing increasing mental health challenges among children and adolescents. Our Webinars help adults make sense of what they’re seeing, respond with greater confidence and compassion, and recognize when additional support may be needed. Pine River specializes in the family model of youth mental health treatment, and thanks to a generous grant from RBC, we are expanding our services in high-need areas in Northern Ontario.

We're training clinicians, youth workers and therapists in the family-based youth treatment model, so that youth and their caregivers move together towards improved mental health and crisis prevention. Thank you, RBC, for your support of Pine River, and youth mental health and addiction treatment. Together, we're building stronger, more resilient communities.
