The three phases of treatment!

When we are treating patients there are three distinct phases of care.

1. ⛑🩹First Aid: This is the stage where we are trying to find out what helps offer you relief. This could be as simple as a specific movement or position, manual therapy, adjustments or other passive tools. Although an extremely important phase of care we want to make sure we dont hang out here too long. Typically some level of relief can be achieved within in the first four visits.
2. 🙆‍♂️ The next phase is functional correction and rehab: In some cases this may also be your first aid and these stages will often overlap. Ideally we want to get into corrective exercises and functional correction as soon as possible. This is how we build resiliency against reinjury!
3. 🏋️‍♀️ The final phase is return to work outs or sports: We use this phase to transition our patients back to what they love doing. The goal here is to build confidence back in their body and help them get back to their every day lives whether its a weekend warrior or an athlete trying to get back their sport!

Running injuries

🏃‍♂️ When runners sustain injuries or begin to develop pain they often do not know what caused it. One of the most common causes of running injuries is overloading the tissue before the body has a chance to adapt.

Many runners are so eager to reach their goal distance or speed that they do not take adequate time to build up their body’s tolerance.

💥 Muscles, bones and joints all need time to adapt to new stresses. That includes new running distances. So when you are starting a new running routine avoid injury but avoiding the “Terrible Too’s.”

Too much, Too Soon, Too Fast.

The golden rule when increasing mileage is to only increase your weekly mileage by 10% at a time.

Great post by Nice visualization of how common disc bulges are without symptoms in different age populations. A systematic review by Brinjikji et al (2015).
Has to be added that a higher % of the people with degenerative changes do have more chance of being symptomatic.
Ref: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/26359154/

So we shouldn’t discard all these changes, but see them with a more balanced view. So here our clinical reasoning and communication/questioning skills come into play.
It’s good to train your communication skills btw. You might think: “well, I’m pretty good in communication... I can talk with people very easily.”
Are you really? 😊
How are your motivational interviewing skills?
What about your skills when asking about the social/emotional aspects? 😊
It’s good to be critical of yourself and see where you feel uncomfortable. Go towards that uncomfortable feeling. That is where growth as a person and as a communicator is. (This was a note to self btw 😊).
Get out of your comfort zone and try new things every day. The comfort zone is really a danger zone anyways.😊👍💪
What do you think?
Let us know! 👍

As different countries and states begin to re open this is a great article outlining the risk of different activities you may consider participating in this summer.

Not all activities are of equal risk and everyone will have to decide what is a reasonable risk to take for them personally as government begins to put those decisions into our hands as quarantine restrictions are lifted.
