I think modern parenting has convinced mothers that loving our children means constantly entertaining them.
Play with them.
Set something up.
Keep them stimulated.
Find another activity.
Do more.
Meanwhile we’re also supposed to cook, clean, work, manage the house, manage everyone’s emotions, take care of ourselves…
No wonder mothers are exhausted.
I don’t think children need us performing childhood for them all day.
I think they need to be included in LIFE.
Let them wash the dishes beside you.
Dig while you garden.
Carry the groceries.
Help make dinner.
Watch you build something.
Come along.
Contribute.
They’ll play through all of it.
And yes—sometimes getting down on the floor and entering their imaginary world is beautiful. Play can be an amazing way to reconnect after something difficult, explore a fear, replay an experience, or give a child another way to express something they don’t have words for yet.
I’m not anti-play.
I’m anti the idea that a mother needs to become her child’s full-time entertainment department in order to be a good mother.
Kids naturally want to be part of what we’re doing when we stop treating real life like the boring thing we need to get through before we can finally “play.”
This ties into so much of my I Am Being philosophy too.
Life itself can be the classroom.
The playground.
The connection.
The lesson.
The experience.
Our children don’t always need MORE created for them.
Sometimes they need more access to what’s already happening right in front of them.
And maybe we mothers need permission to stop making childhood another thing on our to-do list.
🌿 If this kind of childhood and community speaks to you, I created Trailblazers—a relaxed nature community for moms + kids where we meet outdoors, let the kids explore and play without organized entertainment, and give moms a chance to actually connect too.
If you want to join, message me TRAILBLAZERS and I’ll point you in the right direction. 🤍
