This Saturday we’ll be out at the Yonge & Lawrence Village Street Festival, and we’re looking forward to spending the day with our neighbours.

One of the things we love most about this community is that it still feels like a community. Our little stretch of Yonge Street is filled with local businesses, schools, organizations, and people who genuinely care about making this neighbourhood a great place to live, work, and raise a family.

As a local mental health practice, we’re grateful to be part of it.

A big thank you to the Yonge & Lawrence Village BIA, the festival organizers, and all of the local businesses that help keep our main street vibrant year-round. Events like this are a reminder of how lucky we are to have such a strong and connected community right here in the heart of Toronto.

If you’re attending the festival, we’d love to meet you. Stop by, say hello, and help yourself to a freshly baked Counselling & Behaviour chocolate chunk cookie. 🍪

See you Saturday!

We’re at the Disability Services Toronto Information Fair, and it’s been a great day so far.

Connecting with families, community members, and organizations doing important work in this space.

One thing we’re hearing again and again from attendees is that there’s a real gap in psychotherapy that’s actually tailored to the needs of the disability community.

Not just access to therapy, but support that understands complexity, works across systems, and translates into real life. In our experience, that’s where things tend to break down, but it’s also where real progress can happen.

If you’re here, come find us. If not, let’s connect!

When it comes to financial planning, a lot of families we work with feel like they’re behind.
The truth is, the system is complicated and sometimes getting started can be completely overwhelming.

DTC. RDSP. ODSP. Passport. DSO. It’s not exactly intuitive.

Most people are piecing it together as they go, often way later than they wish they had. That’s exactly why we’re co-hosting an event designed to help.

Financial Empowerment
April 15 | 7–9 PM
Lipa Green Centre: Tamari Hall 4600 Bathurst Street, Toronto

A practical session to help families understand:
What matters.
What to do first.
What not to miss.
A bit of clarity in a complex system.

We hope to see you there.

There’s something about being in a room full of people who are all working toward the same goal.

The OADD Conference has been a great reminder of the thoughtful, important work being done across this space. We’ve had some genuinely meaningful conversations with professionals who care deeply about the people they serve and making their communities better.

A lot of shared experiences and a lot of honesty about what’s working and what’s not.
But one thing is clear, there’s a sense that things can be done differently when people collaborate.

We’re really glad to be here and part of it. If you’re attending today come by our booth to say hello and grab a freshly baked cookie 🍪

✨Allow us to reintroduce ourselves✨

We’re Michael and Elyse (and Oliver! 🐾), the founders of Counselling & Behaviour Services.

Michael is a psychotherapist and social worker who works closely with individuals and families navigating complex mental health and disability needs, with a focus on helping people move forward in meaningful, practical ways.

Elyse brings an awareness of branding, events and partnerships, and most importantly a deep understanding of what makes the client experience feel personal, thoughtful, and positive.

We built this clinic because we kept seeing the same gap in the mental health sector; people trying to navigate multiple systems, repeating their story, and still not getting the support they need.

Our focus is simple: thoughtful, coordinated care that meets people where they are and helps them move forward in impactful ways tailed to individual needs.

If you’ve been trying to figure things out on your own, you don’t have to.

Start with a free 15-minute consultation and w’ll help you make sense of taking the next step.

Expert care for complex needs 💫

Where did all the in-person therapy go?

In Toronto, the demand for mental health support is at an all time high, yet in-person psychotherapy has quietly become harder to find than ever.
Since the pandemic, many therapists shifted to virtual care and stayed there. Online therapy absolutely has its place, but we need to be honest: not everyone has the ability to engage with a screen in a way that lets them actually benefit from therapy.

Some clients simply cannot regulate, focus, or form the same therapeutic connection through a device. It is not because they are resistant or not trying. It is because their nervous system, developmental profile, environment, or day-to-day realities make virtual sessions ineffective or overwhelming.

In-person therapy matters for a reason:
• Real connection. Eye contact, presence, and attunement land differently when you are sharing a room.
• Better regulation. A calm and predictable physical space helps people who struggle with overstimulation, anxiety, or executive function challenges.

• Fewer barriers. Not everyone has privacy at home, a stable internet connection, or the comfort of opening up on a screen.

• Higher engagement. Many teens, young adults, and neurodivergent clients do better face to face.

• Structure and accountability. Leaving the house, travelling to a clinic, and stepping into a therapeutic space is part of the intervention.

Toronto does not just need more therapy. It needs therapy that actually works for the people seeking it, including those who can only benefit when the work happens in person.

If you or someone you support has been struggling to find in-person psychotherapy that actually fits their needs, reach out. Our clinic continues to offer in-person care because the demand is real and people deserve options that work. You can book a free consultation at counsellingandbehaviour.com

We often see clients who start feeling down as the weather changes and are more inclined to take a trip to the couch, than venture outside their front door.

Before we dive into a post about “free resources,” we’ll focus in on the most underrated free resource in Toronto. It isn’t a park, a museum, or a festival. It’s the Toronto Public Library, and most people have no idea how much they’re leaving on the table.

We’re so comfortable paying for five different subscriptions every month, but you can get more, and often better services, at zero cost. Quiet spaces, creative outlets, structured programs and a sense of community all matter. And you don’t need kids to justify walking back into a library. Go now. Use it for yourself. It’s one of the simplest, most accessible ways to feel better, learn more and spend less.

If you think TPL is “just books,” you’re gravely missing out. Here are some of the best kept secrets people don’t use but absolutely should:

Free museum and attraction passes:
Yes, really. Through the Museum + Arts Pass program you can access places like the Royal Ontario Museum, Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto Zoo, historic sites and more for free.

Musical instrument rentals:
Guitars, keyboards, ukuleles, violins and even recording equipment. Free. At a public library.

Makerspaces and creative studios:
3D printers, vinyl cutters, sewing machines, photography gear, green screens. Perfect for side hustles, school projects or trying something new without spending money.

Workshops that would normally cost real money:
Coding classes, business basics, job search coaching, financial literacy, genealogy, digital art, podcasting. All included with your library card.

eBooks, audiobooks and magazines:
The Libby app turns your phone into a portable library stocked with thousands of titles. No subscription and no monthly fee.

Movies, video games and streaming:
Borrow films, documentaries, consoles or stream curated collections through TPL’s digital partners.

Community resources:
Quiet study rooms, homework help for kids, newcomer programs, resume reviews, career support and access to academic level databases.

Toronto has its challenges, but access to learning, creativity and community support isn’t one of them, not when one of the world’s best public library systems is sitting right in front of us, free.

If you haven’t walked into your local branch recently, go!

If you haven’t downloaded Libby, do it today.

And if you’re supporting clients, kids or families, send them there. It’s one of the smartest moves you can make.

In Toronto, there is still a real gap between mental health services and disability supports. Too often, people have to choose one or the other, as if good therapy and proper accommodations cannot coexist under the same roof.

At Counselling & Behaviour Services, we reject that divide. We do not only work with people with disabilities. We work with everyone, and we make sure every client, regardless of their needs, gets access to the same standard of skilled, thoughtful, high-quality care.

The truth is simple. If a clinic or practitioner is not prepared to support clients with disabilities, they are not truly offering accessible mental health care. It is on all of us in this field to build the skills, knowledge and resources to accommodate a wide range of needs. Communication differences, sensory needs, processing speed, executive function challenges, these are not barriers unless we fail to prepare for them.

And here is the thing: best practices for people with disabilities are best practices for everyone. Clear structure. Predictable routines. Flexible communication. Practical tools. Respect. Collaboration. These improve care universally.

Toronto deserves a mental health system that actually works for the people who use it.

If you are a clinician, organization or community partner working toward the same goal, let us connect.

Be well, Michael
