This is the kind of relationship I’m building toward as a non-coercive, collaborative parent. A home where my kids don’t have to hide, manage me, or earn connection. Where they feel safe to be fully themselves, and choose to stay close because it feels good, not because they have to.

If this is the kind of family dynamic you want too, I do this work every day with parents and couples. Reach out when you’re ready to change your family’s dynamic from control to connection 🤍

By the way, I had a fun time looking through my old pics to find these very real snapshots of my early teen years!

I almost bawled my eyes out when making this video. 💔❤️‍🩹

When I was a teen I listened to this song on repeat. I felt like life was flying by then, and now that im a parent I try to avoid thinking too much about that feeling - it’s too heart wrenching! I know all too well how short life is (I’m a bereaved sibling - I promise you, I know), and I don’t want to stop this train. Not for a second.

Building deep and genuine friendships with my kids is everything to me. It requires excruciating self reflection and consistent and painful emotional work. But I don’t want to rush through.
I want to be here for it.

With couples and parents I hear it all the time “I don’t wanna constantly have to use therapy speak! Making requests, appreciating my partner and using non violent communication and feelings speak is so not me.”

As someone who detests being told what to do I GET IT!!!!!! But, to live and love relationally requires a whole new set of skills. It’s an entire new way of thinking and communicating. It’s a philosophy! And I promise you - it’s in you and your family’s best interest to become fluent.

When kids are “acting out,” it’s often not a lack of discipline, it’s a nervous system under stress. As my friend says, “kids aren’t acting out, they’re reaching out!”

A child who is yelling, hitting, or refusing is outside their window of tolerance, where reasoning and impulse control are less accessible. In those moments, more control or consequences simply adds pressure to an already overwhelmed system.

To deeply meet our children, a shift is toward regulation first. Human beings return to safety through co-regulation! So when we focus on the nervous system, we’re not excusing behavior, we’re supporting the conditions that make change possible.

Here’s a glimpse into how I do things to help my eldest with life as a sister. It’s a pretty radical way of thinking about behaviour!

Thank you to those who responded to the poll in my stories about this! It was about a 50/50 split in the end, which I’m grateful for - I love trying to respond to the “why” of the way we do things in our home 🩷

Lots of folks talk about wanting a more peaceful, collaborative world. But what most people don’t point out is that we can’t build that world while still believing it’s okay to use dominance, control, and power-over in our closest relationships. We cannot condemn domination in places like ICE detention centers, in Palestine, or in war and conflict around the world… while quietly accepting dominance, control, and power-over in our homes, schools and workplaces.

Deep love, respect and partnership can’t flourish in hierarchical relationships. It’s a relational energy that feeds off of shared power, voice, and mutual respect. Love and domination have never coexisted. Not at a family level or at a societal level.

If we want children who grow into adults capable of building something different, they have to live inside relationships that model shared power from the very beginning! That’s why we practice non-hierarchical, collaborative parenting - the way we love at home becomes the blueprint for how our kids understand relationships. 🤍☮️
