Our thoughts are with the AMHO members and communities across Northern Ontario who have been affected by the ongoing wildfires.

Beyond the immediate danger, wildfire smoke and evacuations can have serious impacts on both mental and physical health, with the greatest risks often falling on people who are already vulnerable or living with complex health needs.

For the past year, AMHO member Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare's Mental Health and Addictions Urgent Crisis Centre has been there to support the residents of Windsor-Essex 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

In that time, the Centre has supported more than 4,200 visits, giving people experiencing a mental health or substance use crisis a place to turn when they need it most.

When we invest in a connected mental health, substance use health and addictions system, everyone benefits. People receive the right care sooner, first responders can focus where they're needed most, and stronger connections to ongoing community support help improve outcomes well beyond the immediate crisis.

Ontario paramedics are responding to a dramatic rise in drug poisoning calls this year:

Hamilton +199%
Toronto +115%
Ottawa +52%
Thunder Bay +20%

These are not simply numbers. Each call represents someone’s neighbour, friend, family member, loved one, or community.

When people can access mental health, substance use health, harm reduction, treatment, housing and recovery supports early, they are far less likely reach crisis and require emergency care.

Sustained investment in Ontario’s mental health and addictions sector is essential to reducing harm, supporting recovery and saving lives.

Non-fatal opioid overdose calls are on the rise in four Ontario cities — nearly tripling in Hamilton in the first five months of 2026. Researchers and social workers suggest the toxic drug supply and the closure of supervised consumption sites in the past two years may be factors.

AMHO is seeking a term employee to serve as the Manager, Quality & Data, a unique opportunity to contribute to high-impact, system-level work within our Health System Transformation and Performance team, including key initiatives like the Excellence through Quality Improvement Project (E-QIP) and the Data-Digital Initiative.

Addictions and Mental Health Ontario is now accepting nominations for our Board of Directors!

We’re looking for leaders who are passionate about advancing mental health, substance use health, and addictions care in Ontario.

Directors help guide AMHO’s strategic direction, serve as ambassadors for our organization, and bring valuable perspectives to support our work on behalf of the sector. Directors are elected to a three-year term, with the option to renew for a second term.

AMHO is seeking up to four nominees this year, with a minimum of three representing AMHO member organizations in good standing.
