First consonant sounds that children make are predictable and incredibly similar across different languages. Babies go from cooing to babbling to speech-like babbling and clear consonant sounds. All this sound play leads to saying his/her first words around 1 year of age.

From one fellow boy mom to another, don’t believe the hype. First words should come around 12 months of age if your child is a boy or purple or green. It makes no difference.

8 to 10 months of age: Babbling
10 to 12 months of age: First word may appear
12 months of age: First word common
13 to 15 months age: Several words emerging
