This Canadian 'Dream Team', comprised of stem cell biologists, surgeons, engineers, mathematicians, health economists and ethicists, is developing innovative therapies for heart disease.

Led by McEwen Stem Cell Institute Senior Scientist, Dr. Michael Laflamme, they are using stem cells to regenerate functional heart muscle to replace damaged heart tissue.

Read more about their approach below:

When Michael Laflamme enters his Toronto research lab and peers at a petri dish of tiny, beating heart muscle cells that were created from stem cells, he glimpses a world where they form the “heart of the future.”

This week, the Government of Canada announced $23.6 million in funding for a McEwen Stem Cell Institute-led study, as part of the New Frontiers in Research Fund Transformation program.

Dr. Michael Laflamme, McEwen Stem Cell Institute Senior Scientist, will be leading a team of researchers to develop state-of-the-art cell and regenerative therapies for heart disease. The interdisciplinary team includes biologists, engineers, clinicians, clinical trialists, mathematicians, bioethicists and health economists across 10 research institutions in four countries.

Congratulations to Dr. Laflamme and the full team of researchers: Vadim Biktashev, Gil Bub, Slava Epelman, Michael Garton, Cristoph Haller, Gordon Keller, Jonathan Kimmelman, Stephanie Protze, Terrence Yau, Sara Nunes Vasconcelos, Adam Feinberg, Stephen Broomell, Lior Gepstein, Kumaraswamy Nanthakumar, Nicolas Noiseux, Narine Sarvazyan, Shi-Joon Yoo, Ali Tavallaei, Ph.D., P.Eng., Valeria Rac, Cristina Amon and Molly Shoichet.

Funding totalling $23.6M has been announced to establish an international team—led by UHN—to develop cutting-edge regenerative therapies for heart disease > https://www.uhnresearch.ca/news/unlocking-cure-heart-disease

Funds provided by the Government of Canada’s New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF) Transformation stream will enable a team that includes >20 leading laboratories across 10 institutions in four countries to overcome key hurdles and advance new therapies to the clinic.

The research teams that will contribute include those located at the University Health Network (UHN; McEwen Stem Cell Institute, Toronto General Hospital Research Institute), the University of Toronto, The Hospital for Sick Children, the Toronto Metropolitan University, McGill University, the CHUM - Centre hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal, Carnegie Mellon University (Pennsylvania), The George Washington University (Washington D.C.), Technion - Israel Institute of Technology and the University of Exeter (Devon, England). The project also leverages existing research projects and networks such as Medicine by Design - University of Toronto, Ted Rogers Centre for Heart Research, and CCRM.

The highly collaborative project is led by the following co-applicant investigators: Michael Laflamme, Vadim Biktashev, Gil Bub, Slava Epelman, Michael Garton, Christoph Haller, Gordon Keller, Jonathan Kimmelman, Stephanie Protze, Terrence Yau, Sara Nunes Vasconcelos, Adam Feinberg, Stephen Broomell, Lior Gepstein, Kumaraswamy Nanthakumar, Nicolas Noiseux, Narine Sarvazyan, Shi-Joon Yoo, Ali Tavallaei, Ph.D., P.Eng., Valeria Rac, Cristina Amon and Molly Shoichet.

On the 100th anniversary of the discovery of insulin, a team of researchers at University Health Network—Drs. Maria-Cristina Nostro, Sara Santana Nunes Vasconcelos and Yasaman Aghazadeh—uncover a new way to increase the survival and functionality of engrafted pancreatic cells.

By co-transplanting microvessels with either donor islet cells or stem cell-derived pancreatic progenitor cells into laboratory models, they show that the microvessels are able to connect more effectively with the host vasculature, which in turn, improves pancreatic cell survival and glucose response.

This finding is closing the gap to using human pluripotent stem cell-derived islets to manage type 1 diabetes.
