This week, the Government of Canada announced $23.6 million in funding for a McEwen Stem Cell Institute-led study, as part of the New Frontiers in Research Fund Transformation program.
Dr. Michael Laflamme, McEwen Stem Cell Institute Senior Scientist, will be leading a team of researchers to develop state-of-the-art cell and regenerative therapies for heart disease. The interdisciplinary team includes biologists, engineers, clinicians, clinical trialists, mathematicians, bioethicists and health economists across 10 research institutions in four countries.

Funds provided by the Government of Canada’s New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF) Transformation stream will enable a team that includes >20 leading laboratories across 10 institutions in four countries to overcome key hurdles and advance new therapies to the clinic.
The research teams that will contribute include those located at the University Health Network (UHN; McEwen Stem Cell Institute, Toronto General Hospital Research Institute), the University of Toronto, The Hospital for Sick Children, the Toronto Metropolitan University, McGill University, the CHUM - Centre hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal, Carnegie Mellon University (Pennsylvania), The George Washington University (Washington D.C.), Technion - Israel Institute of Technology and the University of Exeter (Devon, England). The project also leverages existing research projects and networks such as Medicine by Design - University of Toronto, Ted Rogers Centre for Heart Research, and CCRM.
