Love it when babies smash their goals!

If only there was a study on how skilled doula support improves outcomes for newborns.

I recently saw a postpartum client whose baby measured 9% weight loss at the doctor’s appt the day before.

During a full breastfeed we tweaked the latch and position while I showed her how to tell when her baby is removing milk and how to keep her actively feeding.

We discussed what a full feed typically looks like when it’s going well (at her baby’s age), appropriate and responsive feeding frequency, how to express milk to stimulate supply, and more.

I left my client with clear guidelines for feeding her baby until the next weigh-in and offered a lactation consultant referral for follow up.

The doctor’s appt was scheduled for more than a week away, but I suggested she go back in two days time.

She texted me two days later to say that her baby was almost back to birth weight (gaining over 100g!), latching well and making lots of heavy wet diapers.

I showered congratulations onto this new mama, she was working so hard to grow her baby!

Meanwhile I’m sure the doctor thought the earlier weigh-in was not necessary!

I missed National Physician’s Day but here is a flashback pic of Dr. Aggarwal and myself.

I forgot we met when we were both pregnant!

I was supporting teen mothers as a volunteer at the time.

Shout out to Dr. Aggarwal!! 🙏

I first met Dr. Aggarwal 5 years ago when I volunteered as a doula at a centre for young mothers and she was my client’s OB. We were both pregnant at the time! She was so kind, caring, respectful, and very generous with her time. I recently got to work with Dr Aggarwal this winter after she referred a patient to me who had previously had a traumatic birth. Along with nurse Jessica Katz and the amazing team at Michael Garron, we were able to support my client to have a positive birth experience with her second baby. ‘Cause teamwork makes the dream work!

It’s National Nursing Week!

Flashback of Jessica Katz and myself, circa 2018.

Jessica is a wonderful and highly experienced nurse, educator of nurses, and nursing program professor.

Jessica and I have known each other for over a decade (12 years?!), when she began attending my prenatal and then postnatal yoga classes

We then began working together for my hospital birthing clients when she was on the labour & delivery unit and the charge nurse.

Jessica is passionate about helping patients to have positive birth experiences, especially after
a previous traumatic birth.

She was a strong advocate for both my labouring clients and cesarean birth clients, and was instrumental in bringing me into the OR to assist with maternal/newborn skin-to-skin. Jessica has also connected me with much needed resources and staff within other hospitals.

It’s been a pleasure to work with such skilled and dedicated nurses over the years.

When advocating for my clients, I’m thankful for the conversations I’ve had that were met with openness and receptivity. Conversations that resulted in deeper collaboration and client-centred solutions.

And I’m grateful for all of the ways that nurses work behind the scenes to go above and beyond for their patients.

Recently, when I circled back to an earlier conversation with a nurse about a big ask for a birthing client, she said:

“Yes. I will make it happen.”

Those words. That moment. It mattered so much.

Do other doulas also feel they don’t get any rest when they watch TV? 😂

Me this past week:

- Watching Anne with an E with my daughter and having to talk her through the predominant TV/film narrative that shows birth as a scary-panic where the birthing person always screams during pushing. Also explaining that an ECV for a breech baby isn’t typically done when someone is already in labour (my daughter was also breech).

My daughter’s reaction: MOM!! Shhh!!!

- In post-birth recovery mode and choosing to watch
You, Always, because it looked light, fluffy and brainless. Only to find myself judging the depth of the compressions/chest recoil during a CPR/rescue scene and feeling horrified when they immediately sat the person up instead of rolling them into the recovery position 😭

Today, I think I’ll take a nap and go for a walk!
