The FIFSW Social Work Conference 2026 dives into the theme “More Than a Degree: Building Professional Identity in Social Work.” Michael Adia, Director and Co-Founder of Hope Leads Mental Health Care, kicks off the conference by highlighting the essence of professionalism, self-awareness, ethics, and values.

Michael calls on future MSW students to see professional identity as a collective responsibility, shaped by both individual and shared experiences. He introduces a practical framework for self-reflection, encouraging social workers to continuously evolve in their practice and identity.

Last month, we gathered with an amazing team of social workers, therapists, dietitians, coordinators, admin staff, and primary care providers at Women’s Health in Women’s Hands CHC for a deep, culturally grounded workshop on body image — and the room was fully engaged.

We named that the rise of GLP‑1s and the celebration of only one “acceptable” body type do not mean body image is improving. We explored how colonialism, racism, colourism, gender‑based stereotyping, fatphobia, and the rise of body policing shape embodiment for Women, Trans, and Non‑binary people across African, Caribbean, Black, Latin American, and South Asian communities.

At the centre — and the goal — was body neutrality.

Staff left with practical, trauma‑informed strategies to spark affirming conversations and create care spaces where every body is honoured within healthcare settings.

Huge gratitude to the Women’s Health in Women’s Hands CHC team — and a special thank you to our Hope Leads co‑facilitators, Imogen and Morgan, for leading such a thoughtful and liberatory session.

We are building care that resists policing.
We are building care that feels accessible.
We are building care that makes room for every body.
