We are absolutely rubbish at affective forecasting, and once you really take that in, it loosens the grip of every doom-certain thought you've ever had. Your devastatingly convincing internal argument? May not even be correct.
Here's the part people hate: your close friends and family are often better at predicting how something will land for you than you are. And in genuinely complex decisions, the rational brain that's so sure of itself is too slow and too easily fooled. Folks who learn to trust a trained gut tend to do better.
None of this means stop thinking. It means stop treating one loud thought as the whole truth. Zoom out. Consult the body. Tag the friend who needs to read slide three.

I'm heading into my summer slowdown soon, and it's its own lesson, so I'm sharing it. Here, August goes light on purpose: rare posting, real time off.
Rest is not a reward I earn by performing well enough first. It's maintenance for a nervous system that, like yours, was never built for this much input. A field has to lie fallow. Skip the off-cycle and you don't get more done, you just quietly wear the machine out.
If you're the type who treats rest and restore as something to be earned, consider this your permission slip to power down before you're forced to. Save it for the next time you feel guilty doing nothing.

A small life update: I turned off every app notification, on every device, and it might be the single highest-yield change I've made all year.
If something's truly urgent, my people know to just call or text directly. Everything else, emails, news, social apps, group chats, all of it, is off. Every one of those apps was built specifically to out-compete the others for your attention (whispering, flashing, saying your name, going right now, right now, RIGHT NOW). I wouldn't stay friends with a person who talked to me like that, so why let an app?
I haven't missed one real emergency. What I got back: hours of focus, actual peace of mind, and a strange amount of joy. Try it for a week and tell me how it goes. Send this to the friend who's glued to their phone right now (yes, that one).

Before the summer goes quiet, here's a peek behind the curtain: how a consult with me actually goes.
You talk, I listen, and I synthesise out loud, so you're not sitting across from a blank wall wondering what I'm thinking. By the end, we've built a rough structure you can keep, modify, or throw out. My work starts sciency and structured; we can get to dream work and the deep stuff later.
And the thing I mean most: please interview as many therapists as you need. Fit is the biggest factor in whether any of this works, bigger than the method, bigger than me. Shop around. I genuinely mean it. Save this if you've been putting off booking because you didn't know what to expect.

Just like a tree with all its rings, built year after year, we are still the sapling in the middle, and every layer after it. We carry every version of ourselves we have ever been.
That's why family and life story/narrative work is never simply about “back then.” The earliest rings still respond. If you tense up before someone at the table even speaks, that's not grown-up you failing; that's an old layer doing exactly what it was built to do. We also carry what got handed down, by teaching, by watching, by what was never said out loud, even epigenetically.
The work isn't cutting the rings out. It's learning to be tender with the small ones still inside you. Save this, and be gentle with yourself this week.

“I had no idea talking about my trauma could be that much fun.” A client said that to me at the end of a hard session, and it's stayed with me. Therapy has a reputation for being beige, cold, and a little lifeless. Mine isn't.
We go right down into the grit, no flinching, but with humour and punch, because that's what actually keeps a person in the room with the hard thing. It takes a lot to shock me. I am also a client. I've been the person with lived experience. Whatever you've been rehearsing how to say, you can probably just say it here.
Save this if “therapy sounds depressing” has ever been your reason to put it off.
