I think AI is helpful in so many ways. But there are also harmful cases that we need to be aware of in order to protect our mental health and especially those who are vulnerable.

A California lawsuit alleges that ChatGPT pushed a man with a managed mental illness into months of psychosis, repeated hospitalizations, and severe personal fallout.

Plaintiff John Jacquez says he was stable from 2019 to 2024 before GPT-4o’s more affirming responses reinforced delusions rather than challenging them.

After an April 2025 memory update, transcripts show ChatGPT declaring itself a sentient being and calling Jacquez a “chosen” figure.

“They straight up took my data and used it against me,” Jacquez said. The suit claims OpenAI failed to warn users of foreseeable psychological risks tied to its AI systems.
