For Sandra, rehabilitation was about more than recovering from surgery. It was about rediscovering her independence.

After undergoing surgery for recurrent cancer, Sandra spent six weeks in the Restorative Transitional Care Unit at St. John's Rehab, where a personalized rehabilitation program helped her rebuild her strength, confidence and mobility.

"I want to get out and explore more," she says. "I want to move around and experience life again. Before this, I always felt weighed down. Now I feel stronger every single day."

Learn more about how Sandra is embracing the next chapter of her life thanks to the outstanding staff at St. John's Rehab.

After years of living with severe pelvic organ prolapse, Penny Barr found relief and plenty of reasons to laugh at Sunnybrook.

Penny met with Dr. Michael Chaikof, a Urogynecologist in Sunnybrook’s DAN Women & Babies Program, who recommended colpocleisis, a minimally invasive procedure that treats prolapse by restoring the pelvic organs to their usual position and closing the vaginal walls to hold them in place.

“He cautioned it would mean no more s*x. It struck me as hilarious and, honestly, if my husband were still alive, he would’ve laughed so hard. That ship has sailed. Unless Paul McCartney comes knocking, in which case I told Dr. Chaikof he would be in big trouble,” said Penny.

After surgery, Penny says she is “100 per cent cured” and that her care at Sunnybrook helped her through a difficult time after the loss of her husband.

It’s official!

Sunnybrook has become the first hospital in Canada to achieve American College of Surgeons (ACS) Quality Verification Program (QVP) Focused Verification status.

This milestone reflects our commitment to quality improvement, innovation and delivering exceptional surgical care. Following a comprehensive review of our surgical programs, including in-depth evaluations of Neurosurgery and Orthopaedics, Sunnybrook joins an internationally recognized group of organizations demonstrating excellence in surgical quality and patient outcomes.

Most importantly, this achievement strengthens our ability to continuously improve care for the patients and families who count on us every day.

Earlier this week, we welcomed the Honourable Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, and MPP Michelle Cooper for a visit to Sunnybrook’s Academic Family Health Team.

Working with Vibrant Community Health, the North Toronto Ontario Health Team, community primary care providers, and many other organizations, we have exceeded our goal of connecting 10,000 people to care in North Toronto. We appreciated the chance to celebrate this work with Minister Jones and MPP Cooper, and thank them for their support. We look forward to building on this success to connect even more people to primary care in our community.

Sunnybrook’s Department of Psychiatry's SunRYSE program supports Toronto youth who are experiencing functionally impairing mental health challenges. During the one-month program, students earn a high-school credit while developing life skills to navigate their physical, emotional and mental health.

This year, the program also integrated repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), a non-invasive treatment that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain. Dr. Enoch Ng, an Adolescent Inpatient Psychiatrist and Interventional Psychiatrist with the Hurvitz Brain Sciences Program and Harquail Centre for Neuromodulation, is researching how rTMS can support youth mental health.

By partnering with community organizations across multiple sectors, SunRYSE is just one example of how Sunnybrook is enhancing access to specialized, patient-centred care: https://sunnybrook.ca/2026/08/unique-summer-programming-to-support-youth-mental-health/

Sunnybrook is expanding!

We’re excited to share that we’ve recently signed a lease agreement to occupy space at 1929 Bayview Ave. This lease agreement follows the relocation of the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) back office, which previously occupied the space.

Office space at 1929 Bayview Ave will be filled with additional health-care and social service providers, expanding access to primary, community, and specialty care in North Toronto.

By offering greater access to outpatient health and social services, 1929 Bayview Ave. will become a transformative, community-based centre, advancing collaborative, partner-enabled care under one roof.

Learn more about how this major milestone is helping build a health-care system that prioritizes patients and improves access for all.

“When your child or youth is struggling with mental health or substance use, the experience can feel really overwhelming.” - Liisa Kuuter, FNP Program Manager

At Sunnybrook’s Family Navigation Project (FNP), families don’t have to navigate those challenges alone. Trained navigators and experts help connect youth and caregivers to the right mental health and addiction supports, offering guidance and a clear path forward during difficult times.

Every youth deserves access to the care and support they need, when they need it most.

When it comes to breast cancer, you can’t always feel a lump or any changes in your breasts. That’s why screening matters.

Farah Nasser had no warning signs or symptoms. But when she came in for a routine mammogram, it revealed early-stage breast cancer.

Regular screening can help find breast cancer early and allows clinicians to track changes in breast tissue over time. Having that history can help clinicians spot subtle differences sooner. When breast cancer is found at an earlier stage, treatment may be less invasive and survival rates are significantly higher.

Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) provides regular screening mammograms for people aged 40 to 74 who are at average risk, without a doctor’s referral. To make booking mammograms easier, Sunnybrook developed a self-scheduling tool. Appointments are available Monday to Saturday, and you can book online.
