College of Nurses of Ontario As the governing body for Ontario's 200,000+ nurses, we register nurses, help them maintain competence, and set and enforce practice standards.

We partner with employers, educators and government so that all Ontarians benefit from safe nursing care. The College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) is the governing body for Registered Nurses (RNs), Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs) and Nurse Practitioners (NPs) in Ontario, Canada. Our purpose is to protect the public by promoting safe nursing practice. CNO fulfils its role by:
*establishing require

ments for entry to practice
*articulating and promoting practice standards
*administering its Quality Assurance Program
*enforcing standards of practice and conduct

CNO also supports the regulation of nursing in the public interest by:
*participating in the legislative process
*sharing statistical information about Ontario’s nurses

CNO works in partnership with employers, educators and government so that everyone in Ontario benefits from quality nursing services. Speaking up keeps patients safe. When nurses report an error, unsafe behaviour or a system issue, they help prevent future harm and improve patient care. Reporting is not about blame. It's about creating safer environments for patients and the health care team. It matters, even when no harm has occurred.

For the past 22 years, Erica Atfield has been pursuing the life goal of helping patients as a nurse. Now an RN at The Peterborough Clinic, she says prescribing authority has been a small step toward greater autonomy in her practice.

“It has helped me to connect at a different level with my patients and has shown me how much more I could do with more training,” Atfield shared.

Every patient's health care team looks different. For some it's doctors and nurses. For others, it also includes family, spiritual care providers and Indigenous or traditional healers.

Part of providing inclusive, culturally safe care includes recognizing all members of a patient's health care team. Under the Code of Conduct, nurses collaborate with patients and anyone the patient wants involved in their care — working respectfully with every member of that team.
