Small moments matter more than we think.

The way we greet each other, check in, say goodnight, or offer presence can become the steady rhythm that keeps connection alive.

đź’ˇ Mindful Love Move #8: The Power of Rituals of Connection

Connection is sustained not by insight alone, but by what we do repeatedly.

Rituals of connection are small, intentional moments that signal safety, care, and presence. They are not grand gestures. They are the everyday ways we say, “You matter. I’m here.”

For couples, rituals create emotional continuity and help the nervous system trust that the relationship is safe.

For those who are single, rituals can strengthen connection with self, family, chosen family, and community.

✨ A Personal Reflection
Scott and I have a simple daily ritual.

Each morning, we say to one another, “I love you, and I commit to you.” Each night before sleep, we express our love again.

This reminds us that love is not only a feeling, but a choice we renew with intention.

🧪 Try This
Choose one simple ritual and practice it consistently for the next two weeks.

Let consistency, not intensity, be your guide.

If there is one practice that consistently transforms relationships, it is the commitment to Zero Negativity.

This does not mean pretending everything is fine. It means expressing hurt, disappointment, and frustration in a way that protects the connection instead of damaging it.

đź’ˇ Mindful Love Move #7: Practicing Zero Negativity

Zero Negativity is a foundational pillar of Imago Relationship Therapy. It invites both partners to remove criticism, sarcasm, blame, subtle jabs, and negative tone, and replace them with curiosity, clarity, and appreciation.

Negativity activates the nervous system. It signals danger, making vulnerability and connection much harder.

Zero Negativity does not deny pain. It helps pain be expressed in a way that can be heard and healed. ❤️

Instead of:
“You never listen.”

Try:
“When that happened, I felt unheard. Can we slow down and try again?”

✨ Personal Note:
In my own marriage with Scott, tone, timing, or fatigue can make things feel heavier than they need to be. What brings us back is our shared commitment to kindness, curiosity, and respect.

Zero Negativity is not about perfection. It is about intention.

🧠 Reflection Practice
What might shift if both of you committed to removing negativity for one week?

🧪 Try this:
For the next seven days, try a Zero Negativity Challenge:

1. Notice negativity in tone, expression, words, or withdrawal.
2. Pause and ask, “What is the need beneath my reaction?”
3. Reframe the impulse into a relational request.
4. Share one appreciation with your partner every day.

Safety is built through hundreds of small moments, not a few big ones.

Let kindness become the default setting.

Share Your Relationship Vision ✨

Some of the most tender work I do is with couples saying goodbye - helping them consciously part, not only from each other, but from the dreams they once held together.

What’s often most painful?
The vision for the relationship was never fully spoken.
Each partner carried a private dream, assuming the other knew - only to realize too late they were living parallel stories, not a shared one.

đź’ˇ Why vision matters
When you clearly name and share your relationship vision, you give your partnership direction, meaning, and hope. Without it, it’s easy to get lost in daily logistics and forget the deeper “why” that brought you together.

A shared vision isn’t a fixed plan.
It’s a living agreement about how you want to feel together, the values you want to live by, and the dreams you want to grow side by side.

✨ From my own marriage
Revisiting our vision has helped Scott and me through many seasons of change. Some dreams we’ve lived, some we’ve let go of, and new ones have emerged. What matters most is keeping the conversation alive - because relationships without vision can slowly drift into disconnection.

🧠 Reflect
• If your ideal relationship had three words, what would they be?
• Do you know your partner’s dreams for your shared future?
• How often do you talk about them together?

🧪 Try this
Set aside time this week for a Vision Dialogue. Share what you want your relationship to feel like, stand for, and grow into — then create a simple vision statement you can revisit and evolve together.

Love grows where intention is spoken. 🤍

Conflict happens in every relationship. Even the most conscious ones.
What truly matters isn’t if rupture happens - it’s how we find our way back.

Repair is where real growth lives.
It’s the moment we choose connection over winning, curiosity over blame, and courage over withdrawal.

After a fight, it can feel easier to shut down or sweep things under the rug. But when we return with openness and care, something powerful happens: trust deepens, safety grows, and love feels steadier.

đź’ˇ A gentle reminder:
Repair doesn’t mean deciding who was right.
It means saying, “I care more about us than this argument.”

Try this next time there’s distance:
• Pause until you’re calmer
• Approach gently
• Share your hurt and listen to theirs
• Validate their experience (without needing to agree)
• Offer empathy and a sincere desire to reconnect

Even small repairs - a soft word, a touch, a heartfelt “I’m sorry” - can make a big difference.

đź’ Reflection:
What does repair look like in your relationship?
Is there a moment waiting to be revisited with more care?

Connection isn’t about avoiding conflict.
It’s about knowing you can always find your way back to each other.

With tenderness,
Maureen 🤍

Have you ever had a reaction in your relationship that felt… bigger than the moment?

Maybe your partner was late, or distracted, or forgot something small - but inside, it felt enormous.

That’s not random. That’s a **trigger** - a present-day moment that echoes a wound from long ago.

Imago teaches us that our conflicts are rarely about what’s happening in the moment.

Instead, they’re often about **unmet needs and unresolved pain** from our earliest relationships. And because our partner matters so much to us, their actions touch those deep places.

Instead of asking:
> “Why are they doing this to me?”
Try asking:
> “What old story is this moment activating?”
>“What am I needing in this moment?”

✨ Personal Note
In my own relationship, I’ve noticed that when Scott withdraws, I can feel a pang of loneliness that goes far beyond the present. When I slow down and tune in, I realize it’s tied to childhood moments when I felt left behind or unseen. When I share that vulnerably - instead of reacting from it - it opens the door to dialogue and healing.

🧠 Reflect
- What conflict keeps showing up in your relationship?
- Could it be linked to something much older than your partner?

🧪 Try This
The next time you feel triggered:
1. Pause. Breathe.
2. Ask yourself: *What does this remind me of?*
3. Share with your partner using the Imago Dialogue format:
> “When that happened, I felt …and it reminded me of….”

This is how healing begins.

When couples say they’ve “lost the spark,” what’s often missing is curiosity - the wonder that first drew you together.

In Imago Relationship Therapy, curiosity is the bridge from reactivity to empathy. It turns defensiveness into discovery. When you stay curious, you stay open to what’s alive in your partner, rather than defending who you think they are.

Try this tonight:

What’s something you’ve been thinking about lately that I may not know?
When did you feel most at ease this week?
What do you most need from me when we feel disconnected?
Then simply listen - not to correct, but to connect. Curiosity softens the space between you and makes room for love to return.

Reflection: The Beginner’s Mind
Sit quietly together, breathe, and look gently into one another’s eyes. Silently repeat: “There is more to you than I know.”

Notice what shifts. That simple awareness can reawaken safety, compassion, and possibility.
