“Mental health continues to decline across Canada…”
Why is this happening?
The advent of social media likely played a role. In the past decade, we’ve watched the internet transform the way people connect, especially young people. We’ve normalized posting, texting, emailing, scrolling—while more and more people walk through elevators, streets and subways with their heads down, connected to everything except the people right in front of them.
And now we’re making way for AI, at the same time our need for mental health professionals continues to grow.
How do we build the resources to treat this?
Personally, I’ve felt an emptiness in my heart created by what I believe is the absence of intimate connections in my social circles—even within family.
As a Gen Xer, I feel a responsibility to find new ways, and old ways, to connect with the people I love and care about. To socialize. To recreate—or create—relationships built around the values I believe in.
I’m encouraged to see organizations recognizing this need and finding ways to create genuine, intimate connections with people before it’s too late. I applaud that.
Education. Connection. Communication. Risk.
Be bold in the way you socialize. Get out there. Reach for people. Make the call. Show up.
In person is best. You may not realize how important that connection is to a long and healthy life.
