🌟 Spotlight On: Harleen Grewal, PT 🌟

At Striowski & Associates Physiotherapy, we’re proud to have dedicated clinicians like our physiotherapist, Harleen Grewal, helping our patients move better, feel stronger, and get back to doing what they love.

When asked what she finds most rewarding about being a physiotherapist, Harleen shared:

“Helping patients reach their goals and return to their normal lives is what I find most rewarding. Whether it’s getting back to day-to-day activities, returning to sports, or achieving personal milestones, being part of their recovery journey and seeing their progress is incredibly fulfilling.”

Harleen also believes in practicing what she preaches by staying active, using good body mechanics, and making time for mobility and strengthening exercises in her own routine.

And if you’ve had a treatment session with Harleen, you’ve probably heard her favourite phrase:

💬 “Motion is lotion.”

It’s a simple reminder that movement is often one of the best tools we have for maintaining and improving our health.

Join us in celebrating Harleen and the positive impact she makes on our patients every day!

Walking is simple, accessible, and surprisingly powerful for your body. Each step activates your leg, hip, and core muscles, stimulates synovial fluid in your joints to reduce stiffness, and improves blood flow, delivering oxygen and nutrients to tissues - all important for recovery and long-term joint health. Walking also supports neuromuscular control and proprioception, helping balance and coordination, while benefiting cardiovascular fitness, mood, and metabolism.

Want to make it even better? Add a gentle arm pump like you’re marching in a parade 🎺 - it engages your upper body and core without looking too “mad.” Feeling self-conscious? keep it subtle or hold a light water bottle for resistance.

Small daily steps can strengthen, protect, and energise your body!⚡️🦵

Happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing moms out there! 🌸💛

Being a mom means juggling so much - lifting, bending, running after little ones, and somehow finding time for yourself. Your body works hard, and it deserves a little love back.

Today is the perfect reminder to pause, stretch, breathe, and move in ways that feel good. Even small moments of care for your back, shoulders, or feet make a difference over time. 🧘‍♀️💆‍♀️

We’d love to hear from you: What’s one way you look after your body while looking after everyone else? Share your tips or stories in the comments - they might just inspire another busy mom!

Rehab roadmap for common injuries 🛤️

Recovering from a sprain, surgery or rotator cuff injury is more than just “rest and wait.” A structured, evidence-based approach can support healing and help reduce the risk of re-injury.

The journey begins with a comprehensive assessment, evaluating joint stability, range of motion, muscle strength, and functional limitations. From there, individualised goals are set, focusing on restoring safe movement patterns and progressive loading appropriate to your stage of tissue recovery.

Rehabilitation then progresses through phased exercises - starting with early mobility and activation, moving to gradual strengthening, neuromuscular retraining to improve coordination and balance, and finally functional or sport-specific conditioning. Each stage is carefully monitored to ensure tissues adapt safely while rebuilding confidence in movement.

Every injury is unique, and personalised guidance may mean the difference between a full recovery and lingering limitations. We’re always here to help develop tailored rehab plans in order to get back to safe, strong movement.

The phases of injury healing 🩹⏳

Recovering from an injury isn’t instant - your body follows a natural timeline. First comes inflammation, where tissues may be swollen, sore, or tender 🔴. This is the body’s way of sending reinforcements, so rest, gentle movement, and avoiding anything that aggravates the area are important.

Next is repair, when new tissue is forming 🧩. Controlled activity, light mobility exercises, and gradual strengthening can support healing safely. Finally comes remodelling, where tissues regain strength and function 💪. Progressive load, functional exercises, and sport- or work-specific movement help rebuild confidence and reduce the risk of reinjury.

Understanding these phases helps you work with your body, not against it, for a safer, smoother recovery ✨. Every injury is unique, so personalised guidance from a physiotherapist can make all the difference.

⚖️ As we get older, small changes in strength, coordination, or reaction time can increase the risk of falls. Even minor slips can have major consequences, so preventing them is key.

The good news? Simple exercises done regularly can make a big difference.

Try these for safer movement:

🦶 Single-leg stands – hold onto a chair for support if needed, aim for 20–30 seconds each side.

🏃 Heel-to-toe walking – practice walking in a straight line, placing the heel of one foot just in front of the toes of the other.

🪑 Sit-to-stand – slowly rise from a chair and sit back down 10–15 times to strengthen legs and core.

🧘 Heel raises – lift onto your toes and slowly lower, improving ankle stability.

🌀 Gentle weight shifts – sway side to side or forward/back to challenge your balance safely.

Let us know in the comments if you have any favourite exercises to keep you moving safely👇
