High school students across Durham Region are walking out of class on March 2 to protest OSAP cuts and rising tuition costs. Organizers say at least 26 schools across both boards are expected to take part, with some of the largest turnouts anticipated at Eastdale Collegiate and O’Neill CVI.
O’Neill students plan to leave at 12:40 p.m. and gather at Alexandra Park, Courtice Secondary students will walk out at 1:10 p.m., and Eastdale’s protest is set for 2:15 p.m. Many events will feature student speakers sharing how changes to OSAP could impact their ability to attend college or university.
The walkouts follow the Ford government’s $6.4-million post-secondary investment, which includes cuts to OSAP grants and a new tuition framework allowing increases.
